“great location, reasonable prices”
Reviewed 2 August 2010

I have found it difficult to find a reasonably priced hotel or B and B in Stratford but was pleasantly surprised by the Swan's Nest which was very good value for a one night stay (including dinner, bed and breakfast). Most places insist on two nights if it is a weekend stay but there was no problem staying for only one night (Friday) The hotel was close to the river, the dinner was lovely and there was a very cheerful atmosphere in the hotel as England were playing in the World Cup that night - all right, it wasn't cheerful by the end of the match but everyone was very good natured! The rooms were fairly basic but fine with everything we needed. This is about the third Macdonalds hotel we have stayed in and I have always been really satisfied with the rooms, food and customer service.

We stayed at this hotel for one night as a birthday celebration.

The receptionist was friendly and helpful and we didn't have to wait to check in, the reception area is pleasant.

We had a feature suite which was huge and spotlessly clean. The decor was lovely-elegant and tasteful. The bed was massive and very comfy. The bathroom was not big but was fine and had a big shower cubicle with a powerful shower. The only small negative was that the heated towel rail was mounted above the toilet so you had to lean over the toilet to put towels on it!

We had a drink in the bar before going out, service was friendly and the prices reasonable for a hotel. They do a good gin and tonic, and that can't be said for all bars!

The only downside was the breakfast. The cold buffet part was fine, but the service and hot breakfast were disasterous. The staff were friendly but seemed disorganised. We asked for 2 coffees, they brought one tea, we weren't offered toast so had to ask for it, then it took ages to come, my husband asked for fried egg but got poached, the supposedly freshly cooked breakfast did not seem fresh at all, my scrambled eggs on toast were disgusting, tasteless egg and mushy toast, our hot breakfasts were brought out several minutes apart, we weren't offered sauces, the coffee was lukewarm and way too strong, we weren't offered a top up (not that we would have had one!).
As part of a special birthday celebration, this was disappointing, we should have had a nice relaxed breakfast but we couldn't get out of there quickly enough. This isn't a cheap hotel, and in every other way it was lovely, but breakfast let it down big time!

We would happily stay here again, but we would chose room only!

First thing I'll say about this hotel is that it's very hard to find the entrance to the lobby when you are checking in. We picked it due to the fact it's located on the Avon river and it's a very short walk to the heart of the town and Shakespeare's home. The hotel itself is very average. Room was very warm but I had left from another MacDonald property that morning so I had gotten them to call ahead and make sure there was a fan in the room for us. That's something you have to get accustomed to in England if you are from the United States, no air conditioning as we're use to. Pub that's attached had great food and the breakfast we had was typical English fare. Coffee was very good!

Thank you for your review following your recent stay, we do value all feedback and thank you for taking the time to post your comments on Trip Advisor. I take note of your comment about locating the entrance to the reception area, and will look at the signage to see if it can be improved. The hotel is as you rightly say in an ideal location, only a few minutes walk from the town centre and all the facilities and tourist attractions. I am pleased that we had provided a fan in your room as requested, however, the majority of rooms at the Swan’s Nest Hotel do have air conditioning. We hope that you continue to enjoy your tour around the UK.

As patrons of the RSC, we visit Stratford several times a year and have done so for many years, and we have stayed in most of the town's hotels, across a wide price range.

I can honestly say that we found the Swan's Nest one of the best in the range, the rooms were comfortable and the hotel was clean throughout. The staff in the dining area and the Bistro were well trained and pleasantly positive in responding to any request we made. With regard to the food, the breakfasts were extremely good(always a good test for us) and we greatly enjoyed the choices offered whilst eating 'al fresco' in the Bistro, which we thiought very good value for money.

We have but one complaint, which is that when we tried to arrange a return trip 2 weeks later, they were fully booked!! We'll know what to do next time.

We found this hotel was in a great location and could walk into the town centre in 10 minutes, the rooms are clean and of good spec with A/c and flat screen TV, but go for an upgrade if you can as these rooms are really big and are in the old part of the hotel. Its very close to the river only a couple of minutes walk and free parking at the hotel. Breakfast was excellent and quick to serve to, the bar in the hotel is very cosy and has some local beers on tap! All i can say is we thoroughly enjoyed out two nights and would recommend it.
Plus you can use the sister hotel over the road that has a spa and swimming pool for free.
