Mercure Stratford-Upon-Avon Shakespeare Hotel
Reviewed 17 January 2014

We have stayed here several times before, usually being welcomed in the winter months by warm glowing fires and equally warm hospitality; but this visit in a chill January was distinctly cool. The receptionist had a very poor command of English, both to be understood and to understand, and the hotel had our wrong address. Our bedroom was unheated and after a query to reception - the phone line to the desk was never responded to so I was obliged to go back down - I was told the heating system was through the air conditioning vent which was high up and at the far end of a long room, but even at the highest temperature setting it never made the bedroom other than permanently cool. And though the bathroom was smartly re-furbished there was no heating there - not even a warm towel rail; so the bathroom was permanently cold; as was the hot tap in the smart new basin - even after being run for five minutes or more the water remained cold. This rather took the gloss off a tastefully furnished and attractively decorated room.
The full English Breakfast offered a good choice, but the hot food display cabinets had not kept the food more than just warm -eggs, bacon and sausages had been there some time.
Finally, as we checked out the same receptionist tried to charge us a second time, and again for the same wrong address- I had to produce my copy of the original on-line confirmation before it was accepted the hotel had made an error; and to cap it all we had to pay £10 for the hotel car parking - something not mentioned in the booking literature. Overall a historically significant venue that needs a bit more customer care to retrieve it's once good reputation. Could do better.

We recently stayed for a 2 night midweek break and have nothing but praise for this hotel.
We have visited Stratford many times and on this occasion wanted somewhere central. The mini suite we had was lovely as was the general hotel environment, we found it very relaxing with all the staff encountered being very friendly, polite and helpful.
We dined in the restaurant on one evening and found the food of a great standard and good value.
Would recommend to anyone and will
definately stay here again.

We stayed at this hotel last weekend for one night. The style of the hotel looks very appealing from the outside in the traditional Shakespeare country style. Our experience upon checkin was disappointing. The receptionist had a trainee badge and couldn't speak very good English. Usually you'd expect to see another member of staff with a trainee, especially when there's a queue to check in. We arrived at 1.45pm bearing in mind check in is from 2pm. We were told we had to wait 15 mins for our room to be ready, as did all of the other guests. I can hardly believe that rooms aren't ready 15 mins before. We were asked if we were using car parking or required a newspaper the next morning and said 'no' to both. In the middle of the night at 1.30am the fire alarm went off for around 30 seconds. It have us a real fright and ruined our night's sleep. The next morning on check out there was no apology for the fire alarm and we were presented with a bill for a newspaper and car parking! What was the point of asking us if we wanted either of those on check in but then billing us regardless? The staff weren't very friendly, were unapologetic and didn't offer the warm welcome the outside of the building had indicated. The room was great though, apart from the hair dryer, which we turned on and it didn't work. We looked up the nozzle and it was red hot inside and giving off smoke - very dangerous! Luckily there was another hair dryer in the room, although they should have already removed the faulty one.

Room Tip: If it says double/twin make sure you specify what you want to you'll get a twin!

Got this hotel at a great rate from booking.com- less than £50 per night for two sharing a double room. The location is fantastic. Literally five minutes to the theatre. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Our room was small but well equipped and clean. Our friends were allocated a room with four poster bed. One of the best hotels we've stayed in in Stratford at a great price.
