Both my boyfriend and I were visiting Straford for a romantic weekend away and thought the Mercure would be a safe bet. The exterior of the hotel is beautiful and the reception/downstairs area is tastefully done.

We were given room 1.05 which was right at the top of the stairs, so other people staying at the hotel were continously walking past our room and with the creaky floorboards this did not make for a good nights sleep. We recognised the fact that this was a listed building and it's original features were part and parcel of the hotel, however this surely didn't mean that no effort had to be made in making the room comfortable. The bed was on a slope and there was a massive dip in the middle of the bed. The tea making facilities were poor with no bottled water (this wouldn't have been a problem if the tap water weren't luke warm) or selection of tea - just a few tea bags and sugar sachets stuffed in a box. The cushions on the bed and on the chair in the room looked old and dated, with buttons missing and had an 'old' smell.
The bathroom had thankfully been modernised however there were hairs in the sink on arrival and when having a shower, despite closing and securing the shower door water leaked everywhere and took ages to dry - I am amazed neither of us slipped!
I hardly ever rate anywhere as poor however both of us thought this hotel lacked quality and comfort which we had expected from the Mercure brand. Neither of us had a good nights sleep which meant our second day in Stratford was ruined with us being so tired. I am a little sceptical that we were given this room as we had booked it on a relatively cheap rate at £48 however this was still far too expensive for what we received.
I wouldn't recommend this hotel, and in particular room 1.05.

We spent our honeymoon here twenty years ago. Had as good a time now as we did then. The surrounding area is beautiful. A wide range of restaurants within walking distance of which our reviews can be read.

We stayed here for one night on quite a good deal but then found we had to pay £10 for parking. The room was clean and comfortable and the bathroom was very spacious. However I had to clean some ingrained staining off the base of the bath before I used it and the roller blind at the bathroom window was very shabby - frayed and looked as though it had had its day. Overall though it was fine and the view out of the windows looked out over the Shakespeare gardens. Breakfast was filling but would have been better if it was hotter. We find this at a lot of hotels - whether it is self serve or waitress service. How hard is it to keep a breakfast hot? Would stay again if I could get a good deal.

Tastefully done, Tudor style hotel with good sized rooms, great variety at breakfast and very friendly staff. Rooms are clean and all requirements met. It's extremely close to lots of great restaurants and bars/pubs and the entire area is just beautiful.
Can't wait to go back.

The hotel is very well located for access to the Royal Shakespeare Company and good restaurants. Efficient staff. Characterful hotel that made you feel part of the old town. Open fires in lobby area for a welcoming feel on a cold day.
