“Comedy of errors”
Reviewed 3 September 2014

Our room, it's facilities where acceptable. However, our stay was spoilt by the most disorganised breakfast team we have ever experienced. Our stewed tea arrived with no milk. No milk at the breakfast bar. Asked a waitress for porridge "I'll ask Michael to come over, he'll take the order" Michael never came over. 10 minutes have elapsed, asked another waitress, "oh,I can take that order." Emphasised that it must be plain porridge, 5 minutes later the warmish porridge arrived with cinnamon and banana slices in it. 5 minutes later proper requested porridge arrives. Clearing our own table used items on to another uncleared unoccupied table. Went for beans, sausage and fried eggs. No eggs. Don't pay to see "Comedy Of Errors " stop for breakfast at this hotel and you will be in it.

Ideal central location for exploring Stratford. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast choices were excellent in restaurant and room service, including our request for baked beans with room service breakfast even though it wasn't a menu option. Staff were helpful, polite and friendly. Will stay here next time we visit.

I have to say when we arrived at the Shakespeare Hotel, the stunning building takes your breath away, that sadly is where it lies. From the moment we walked in the staff were not that busy yet took along time to deal with us. We were given our room key, which was booked as a four poster junior suite, we were given room 140, all I can say is it as a very tired, drab room, with a broken bed (not four poster) and an old bathroom with an even older sofa. I then went to complain as I had two emails confirming the four poster suite. I was told quite blankly by the receptionist Anna, sorry we don't have any I cannot move you, I again showed her the email and eventually she got her manager Becca, who eventually changed our room to a four poster junior suite. Which was tastefully decorated, had two TV's a mini bar and a four poster bed modern bed. The breakfast the next day was like a trip to faulty towers and the staff were really not bothered if they were there working or not and it showed. We asked for a cup for our coffee three times and milk which they then just took from the table behind and the milk jug had been used. Parking is an issue, although we obtained a voucher from reception and parked in the NCP park about 5 minutes from the hotel, I have to say I was worried about the car as it was not the nicest place. I think for the hotel and position they need to really upgrade this hotel and fast

My husband and I stayed at The Shakespeare to celebrate the occasion of a friends birthday. On the plus side we did manage to park in the hotel car park after moving signs that said reserved( for Mr & Mrs ???) having been assured that parking spaces could not be reserved. The spaces are very small but better than parking at the NCP. The building is old and very quaint to look at but needs serious TLC. We asked to view our rooms in advance of registration as we had just read recent reviews. The rooms are very small and ours overlooked the car park. The bed is positioned so that the cupboard containing the mini bar (empty) and the tea and coffee making facilities cannot be opened fully. The bed was extremely soft and when we asked if there were rooms with firmer beds we were told no. Our friends room overlooked a flat roof with multiple sky lights, but acceptable as town centre. Our room was next to the service lift but we did not hear this operating during the night. We had pre dinner drinks in the garden which on a sunny day is lovely. The young barman was particularly helpful and friendly. The restaurant at The Shakespeare is now a Marco Pierre White establishment and we declined breakfast as we had previously had a bad experience at The Cube in Birmingham. Perhaps we were too hasty and should have experienced this for ourselves. The decor of the restaurant has MPW's signature look eg him, him and more him. So many black and white photos!! Our room was not the most clean we have stayed in. The curtains were stained and the windows were filthy. The shower was powerful and plenty of hot water but the water went everywhere and there is a window in the shower so the wonderful period leading will soon be ruined. There was some mould on the tiles which could easily been removed with proper cleaning. The bedside lamp shade was broken. Overall the room was not up to standard and I am afraid that the "quaintness" does not compensate.

Room Tip: Check your room before registration. Make sure you can get around the bed to the bathroom.

Recent TripAdvisor reviews of this perfectly located, very old hotel, frankly frightened us. We had booked an overnight stay months ago in order to attend a birthday party. Only last week did I again review TripAdvisor ratings and saw reviews of "possible health risk," "smells of raw sewage" and "won't stay again if free." Quite sobering!
We telephoned the hotel and told the manager on duty of these reviews and said we would not hesitate to leave if those reviews matched our experience. Besides assuring us our rooms would be acceptable, he warned us to avoid TripAdvisor: "It's an American web site and they don't 'moderate' reviewers' comments." Being American (and a lawyer to boot), I'm sure he did not intend the compliment his critique actually is.
Well, bottom line; it wasn't horrible, but it is difficult to recommend. There were several of us in our party and we inspected the offered rooms before checking in. The price is very low, the buildings are very old, and the beds are aweful. The rooms were not fragrant, but neither were they immaculate. The furniture is old and stained, the drapes are stained, but the bathroom, linens and towels were good. I'm a big guy, need a sturdy bed, and those offered here are springy and the softest, least supportive bed I've ever experienced. That said, we stayed the night and paid the bill.
New on the property is Marco's, a "New York Italian" restaurant by Marco Pierre White, decorated, of course, by dozens of black & white portraits of a brooding MPW. The garden bar is delightful.
Mercure is part of the French Accor family of properties which prides itself on excellent management. They should be giving this property some special, hands-on attention. There are lots of nice places to stay in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and many, many reasons why you would want to spend some time in this wonderful town. I don't think the Shakespeare Hotel is one of them.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms above kitchen - it opens really early!

We stayed for 2 nights and found this hotel to be an excellent base for exploring. Bedrooms were on the small side but had bags of character, beds were comfortable and great shower. Breakfast was nice and the staff were friendly. All in all good value and would stay again.
