The White Swan Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 August 2013

The major refurbishment the hotel has undergone since we visited last is very impressive - the facilities of the rooms and overall ambiance have been enhanced without destroying the period nature of the 15th century building.
The reception and catering staff were very helpful and added to our primary purpose of seeing a play at the nearby RSC (which was outstanding).
The lack of on-site parking coupled with the Stratford one-way system was the only (minor) downside.

The White Swan is a charming hotel with a lot of history and character. The bedroom was very comfortable with everything we needed provided. Lovely roll top bath and walk in shower with robes and slippers, just what we needed after walking round Stratford on o e of the hottest days of the year. The air con in the room gave us our best nights sleep for a while. The bar is full of nooks and crannies with sofas you can sink into and excellent late night service. The breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice, we did not need to eat again that day.

Room Tip: We were in room 210 which is on the back and therefore very quiet

My husband and I have just returned from celebrating our anniversary over a long weekend at the White Swan in Stratford. On arrival we found the check-in staff to be very helpful and attentive, before we were directed to our room.

The room was amazing. It was very in keeping with the period, but also very, very tastefully decorated. A lot of thought had obviously gone into this task. Even down to the roll-top bath.

I had a little surprise arranged for me by my husband, but also elaborated on by the staff, of a beautiful single red rose on our bed, and a card (both requested by my husband), but the staff had gone the extra mile and gifted us chocolate-dipped strawberries and a beautiful and rather indulgent cake, topped off with a bottle of champagne (the champagne my husband had requested). All very nice touches.

Our meal there was impressive, as were the breakfasts. Not food that you'd tend to expect from anywhere other than a top London restaurant. And the staff were wonderfully attentive.

I unfortunately took ill with an ear infection, which, to be fair, had been brewing leading up to the break. But materialised in extreme pain on the second day we were there. The front desk staff were very particular in making sure that my husband had access to the most prudent medical care available on a Sunday, whilst trying to ensure that the rest of our plans weren't spoiled.....we were hoping to go to Warwick Castle, which mean that going to Stratford A&E would deviate too much from our aspired plans. The front office staff instead recommended that Warwick A&E / Out of Hours service would therefore be our best option. By lunchtime I'd been seen and treated, less than an hour waiting time, and under 40 minutes travel time. We made it too the Castle well ahead of target.

The hotel itself is no more than 10 minutes walk from anywhere of interest in Stratford, and the parking is virtually on the doorstep.

Overall the staff were wonderfully friendly and courteous, the hotel which was full to capacity, wasn't noisy or untidy, everywhere was clean and smelled healthy (not old or musky). I cannot rate it highly enough. We will definitely be back!!!

We went for a meal here on a Thursday eve and were slightly surprised to see the place so empty, but grateful for the speed the food arrived!

The new head chef used to work in a fantastic restaurant around the corner and we were excited about the dinner, and not disappointed. 2 rosette food for pub prices, very nice! Steve the duty manager was friendly and courteous, and the bar staff were great as well, which is a big change to a few months back when the front of house staff were bored, rude and lazy, so all in all a great step forward!

Lovely food, would recommend

I have been here on numerous occasions and have to admit I have not stayed here or tryed the food. However, I have used the bar as it is a useful waiting point for the bus home.
On this one time I found the bar staff to be very inattentive and very offhand. A shame as the interior is first rate and very atmospheric.
Must have been a bad day! Will do a other update in the future.

This is a smart hotel in the centre of Stafford BUT there are some really niggily things that make it 3 star rather 5.

Firstly we had an awful room 301. It could overlook to the church but the small window is tucked in the corner so it feels like a cell.

Secondly the shaving mirror is 4 feet from the floor so you cannot use it unless you are a dwarf!

Thirdly the parking on arrival is unclear and then when you do work out that you should not pay (most seem to) you get a complimentary card for your windsreen but no coupon to get out??

Fourthly it is really annoying being told which floor you are travelling past in the lift..........why?

Lastly the breakfast was excellent (dinner ok) but you wouldnt believe how microscopic the paper serviettes were.....cutting corners is such a shame for a stylish place with excellent staff..

Still recommend but not for dinner.

Room Tip: avoid 301 and probably 201 and 101

We stayed here for one night while we were down for the CLA game fair.
We stayed in a grand double room which was lovely, as was the en suite.
The reception staff were friendly and courteous.
My only criticism would be the bar/restaurant staff. When we went to the bar for a drink on arrival the bar tender was impolite and made us feel like we were burdening her. The same staff member also sat us down for breakfast then forgot about us so we waited longer than expected.
I won't judge the hotel based on one staff member and will certainly return.
