Back again for another Sunday lunch since the magnificent refurbishment in 2011 and the food was every bit as good as we remembered, the surroundings as full of character as they have always been, and the whole place exuding a sense of history.
Have to say, though, that the welcome was pretty non-existent and the bar service frankly amateurish to start with, although it did improve somewhat during the meal.
This is a special place (particularly for Sue and me as we spent the first night of our honeymoon here 47 years ago) and it deserves the little touches that provide that sense of occasion. They were lacking this time, sorry. When you ask for a bottle of wine to go with your meal, you don't expect it simply to be slapped down unopened on the bar counter. At least I don't. There were a couple of other small, but annoying, mistakes which made me wonder if this was the Sunday morning after a too hectic Saturday night before.More
