I stayed in the Courtland for one night on business. Arrived quite late in the evening and was made to feel very welcome. The room was very nice and clean with everything you would expect from a larger Hotel.
Breakfast was plentiful and the checkout very quick.
Great value for money and would definately recommend.

Room Tip: Double room was nice and spacious

Stayed for a last minute trip on a Saturday night - chosen for its location as very central and we just fancied a day / night in Stratford-upon-Avon so we weren't planning to be spending any time in our room.

When we arrived the landlord / owner (sorry, didn't get his name) couldn't do enough for us - gave us a map, pointed out a few places of interest, recommended a restaurant, Grants, (which happened to be his son-in-law's but we went somewhere else so cant comment). Were shown to our small room but very nicely made up and clean, right temp (even though window was open as know other people complained of temperature), kettle, hairdryer, nice biscuits, tv etc etc.

The bed was vv comfortable and we only changed and slept in the room so ideal for what we wanted.

Would stay again for sure. Oh and the breakfast was great - even do a veggie sausage which can't be said for everywhere :)

When we initially booked the hotel we had read no reviews but were pleased with the look of it on their website. We booked over the phone and the owner was friendly and helpful. We were sure of a pleasant stay and were looking forward to the visit.

However, we later that day read the reviews of the hotel on the internet. Our hearts sank as we saw that half the people that visited had given bad reviews. We reassured ourselves again by noting that many of them were old reviews and that things might have changed a lot since they had been written. There was nothing we could do so we tried to forget the reviews.

The location of the hotel was immediately wonderful as it was an easy ten minute walk from Stratford-Upon-Avon railway station. It is also on the next road to the main street in Stratford, including Shakespeare's birthplace and a variety of beautiful little shops.

The owner greeted us happily and couldn't have been more helpful. We were given a map and suggested a number of places to go and nice places to eat. There were the usual leaflets and things in the reception for us to peruse too so we had plenty of options.

Our room was beautiful, the ensuite incredible (with a large bath, shower and all amenities we could possibly need). We couldn't have wished for more in the room with tea and coffee, a hairdryer and little shampoo and conditioner bottles. The beds were comfortable and there was plenty of space for the two of us (in a triple room).

The breakfast was wonderful and a great start to each day. There was a wide choice of cereal and you could have yoghurt and orange juice before your breakfast was even brought out. then there was the option of a full-cooked breakfast which was cooked to your specification as noted the previous day, and tea or coffee.

The stay was very much enjoyed by both of us and the hotel was definitely value for money. We would certainly go back again and would recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive yet pleasurable stay in Stratford town centre.

A wonderful hotel.

Room Tip: Ignore bad reviews, it's a wonderful hotel

Firstly in response to other comments, This B&B is run by a couple, they do not have a mass of staff to do everything for them. This is why they ask for payment on arrival, so that they don't have mess around in the morning whilst trying to do breakfasts. Also, I'm assuming, they do the breakfasts in 15 min intervals because they only have 2 pairs of hands and cannot be expected to cook, serve and clear up for everybody at once.

When we phoned to book the room, the lady (sorry I can't remember her name) was very pleasant and helpful. She even gave us recommendations for restaurants.
Upon arrival we were given a parking permit. Then we paid and were shown to our room. We were in room 2. It was very nicely decorated, very clean and with a clean, modern bathroom.
Beds were comfy, it was a bit noisy with the window open, but as it was December it wasn't a problem having it closed.
The B&B is perfectly situated if you want to go shopping or to the theatres and restaurants.
I cannot find fault with this place. Owners were very friendly and helpful. Place was very clean and perfectly adequate.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

My partner and i decided to get away for an evening, so we went to Stratford in search of a B&B. After wandering around for a while, we stumbled upon the Courtland. We knocked the door to ask if there was any vacancies and were greeted by the landlady who kindly gave us the pick of two well appointed bedrooms.
We picked the slightly more expensive one( both however, very reasonably priced) because of the en suite, the other having private facilities across the hall and big fluffy dressing gowns for the short hop.
We found to be clean and comfortable with some very nice personal touches. It had everything we needed and more than you would expect for such a keenly priced stay.
The landlady gave us a rundown of the local restaurants and we were not disappointed by her recommendations, apart from her personal favorite being full! We opted for her second favorite! Which was lovely!
After a great nights sleep in our very comfortable bed, we came down for breakfast. It became obvious that the landlady is an excellent cook herself and also sources high quality ingredients as the breakfast was comparable to any four star hotel i've had the pleasure of staying in.
All in all, we had a lovely stay and found the landlady very welcoming and helpful. We will definitely return and recommend to friends when visiting stratford.

We had a very enjoyable stay in Stratford Upon Avon and found this hotel very well positioned within the town (although the inevitable traffic and late-night pedestrians were a disturbance for our young family).
The hotel is very tastefully furnished and the breakfasts were delicious.
We have read a number of the reviews on this site, and these were mentioned to us by Diana (the Manager) as we left, who seemed genuinely upset to have received negative reviews.
We would say on reflection that Diana particularly seems tense and a little rigid, but maybe this is a consequence of a number of criticisms that she hasn't felt able to respond to face-to-face. We actually liked the idea of booking a breakfast slot which reassured us that our breakfast would be freshly cooked and we wouldn't be waiting too long for it, given that John was cooking alone in the kitchen. We were also happy to plan our breakfast the night before - especially as I wanted kippers which may not be readily available early in the morning.
We did feel bombarded with information as we arrived, and would have preferred to pay as we checked out rather than in, but this was only a small inconvenience as we would have preferred to see our room and have a cup of tea on arrival. We were also concerned about the two large windows that our daughter's bed was pushed up against as they had no safety opening mechanism at all.
Diana has a wealth of local knowledge, and helped with recommendations for restaurants, etc.
We suggested review cards in each room given mixed reviews on internet sites, which may provide guests with an oppotunity to give more immediate feedback in a less threatening way than the visitors book in the hall, and a less potentially destructive way than the internet. Diana needs to relax a bit and accept the comments people make - if face-to-face interactions are tense and uncomfortable, guests may feel they have little option but to mention every minor detail on internet review sites.

I have tried to be as objective as possible and read others' reviews to get a balance here. We booked quite late and with agreed arrival time of quite late (9pm sat eve) Like a previous guest highlighted I did receive a call to enquire about the arrival time as the owners were waiting to eat. On arrival I did also feel rushed and the owner did say that they were waiting to eat. I really dont know why this should be mentioned as it makes the guest feel as they are imposing. Yes we paid on arrival (even before we were shown the room!) and I was aware of the policy-again it felt rushed and maybe a bit abrupt. Room 2 was quite small as was the bathroom. Ok for 1 night but would not want to stay longer. Room was clean and comfortable. Its on a busy road so would not be able to leave window open at night. We were told what time to eat as it appears to be in 15 minute time windows and as we were the last guests to check in were only given 1 time of 8.45 which was later than we would have liked.
Breakfast was hearty but before we had finished eating the owner was giving us departure instructions and a reminder to leave the key. Again its all about timing and making your guests feel at ease and relaxed.
In conclusion I felt that maybe this was a one booking too many for the owners that particular weekend but I have had this feeling before at other guesthouses. My advice to the owners would be to have a good read of the reviews left and maybe address some of the issues on customer care-its all about the small things especially in such a competitive industry.
