“Very good experience”

Price might sound high, but we went to see this attraction early enough in the morning. Basically we were behind the doors before opening hours. As first customers of the day we got excellent attention and got great stories and details of Shakespeare's life. The house is in amazing condition and you can feel the history in your foot steps. In my opinion the other houses are worth the visit as well.

Firstly this attraction really should be brilliant. It's in a beautiful town and alive with history but I was just left feeling ripped off.
My son and I only wanted to see Shakespeare's birthplace but were forced to buy a three house ticket if we wanted to go in.
The house itself is lovely, the windows of the birth room are amazing. But that's where it ends. The guides were costumed but were wearing modern watches and shoes and had no clue of the history beyond their scripts. The set dressing, whilst looking good and not expected to all be original is largely made up of brand new (admittedly very good) John Hudson pieces and no effort had been made to make them look used or even aged. There were actors in the garden who were supposedly there to perform on demand. They were in their own world and completely ignored us when we stood politely waiting for them. They were laughing and chatting to each other.
Sadly this is just a cash cow now. We were in the building for less than 30 minutes.

Thanks for taking the time to review your visit to Shakespeare's Birthplace. I'm sorry to hear that you were disappointed by your visit.

Our 3 house tickets were introduced based on the results of a visitor survey where respondents told us that they would prefer to spend less on a group ticket than to pay more for individual houses. We also find that combining the three properties into one ticket encourages visitors to explore a little further afield than they might have otherwise. This helps to facilitate the discovery of all 3 of our beautiful houses around town.

Our staff and volunteers are extremely passionate about their subject and have a wealth of knowledge to share. Many of them do wear watches in order to keep track of time so that the visitor experience doesn’t suffer, but they always try to keep them out of view.

It is disappointing to hear that the usual high standards of our in-house actors were not met on this occasion and I would like to apologise for this.

The house itself is presented with a mixture of original and replica items on display. Our aim is to recreate the houses as they would have been in Shakespeare's lifetime, rather than to create an impression of age that may be misleading.

I hope that you might have the opportunity to visit us again, to explore our other houses in the centre of Stratford and to receive the positive experience that we aim to provide all our visitors.

“Great experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

Visiting the Shakespeare´ s birthplace was an experience in itself, but it went to another level when we found out on the courtyard there were actors from the Sakespeare theater who presentend on demand Shakespeare´s sonnets and pieces of his plays. We could have sat there the whole day enjoying the show. My wife loves the sonnets and enjoyed especially when her favourite sonnet was presented. A moment to remember.

“Great introduction to the Shakespeares Life, Works and Family Background”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

This pay for Attraction is well worth the money. It has recently been overhauled and the Audubon visuals are first class, getting you into the mood and spirit of the man and his works and the culture of the day. The actual home is the family's and much of the construction is original. They were not paupers and this is evident. It was good to reflect through snippets and quotations how productive he had been and how much of his work affected the extent and use of English. There us a wonderful garden, with fruit trees including a large mulberry reflecting the way things were in the past and there are impromptu performances there by actors, taking requests from visitors, the cafe and shop are now obligatory and worth a visit at the end. There is a combi ticket giving discounts to other attractions too, like Anne Hathaways cottage etc, and concessions of course.
