“A Mad World My Masters - unplanned mayhem!”
Reviewed 23 August 2013

Great modern theatre in the style of the Globe - but with all creature comforts, including comfortable seats and a roof!! We happened along on a Saturday night, after hearing excellent reports of this production, and were extremely lucky to pick up a bargain pair of tickets for £5 each! The drawback? They were on the second row of Gallery 2 (ie back row with a padded barstool-height seat, but which necessitated standing to get a decent view). Seats at the RSC can be pricey, but you can sometimes find reductions if you plan ahead - which we WILL do next time (Ground or Gallery 1 with a front view would give the best experience).

Despite the slightly limited viewpoint, the performance was funny, witty and bawdy - suitable for those with broad minds only! A complex plot, lots of slapstick, innuendo and visual jokes, interspersed with 50s songs of Billie Holiday and B B King (sung superbly by Linda John Pierre) - Middleton's Jacobean farcical satire on a world obsessed by money and sex worked well updated to 1950s Soho.

Tip 1: See the RSC website for more info: http://www.rsc.org.uk/whats-on/a-mad-world-my-masters/

Tip 2: Check out the RSC website http://www.rsc.org.uk/buy-tickets/stratford-prices.aspx to find possible reductions

“Titus Andronicus”
Reviewed 23 August 2013 via mobile

Wonderful theatre, great view from gallery one at a reasonable price. Staff very helpful when booking re seat selection and warning over material.

My 12 year old son loved it and couldn't believe how quickly the time went - I had been worried he could sit for that long.

I gave my son a general overview of the story before it started and he followed the play well, other than (thankfully) sexual references that were over his head. My partner didn't keep up with who was who so well!

Overall a good evening and discussion afterwards.

“Titus Andronicus: very average”
Reviewed 20 August 2013

Rather over-indulgent, over-confident actors - they've been doing the play for some months now - at times turned this great tragedy into a farce. I'm all for drawing the humour out of Shakespeare - there's a lot of it in his plays - but this was overdone at the expense of the serious intent and great moral tragedy of the play. Comedy can heighten the sense of the tragic but this didn't: it went too far. The actors got carried away with the laughter they evoked. Amusing it may have been but tragic it was not. The tragic ending with bodies all over the place was made farcical by some of the acting. The production had some very good moments, and some very good acting. It was a pity. Watch the Anthony Hopkins' version on DVD. That's class!

“Tourist Trap”

Over priced and under fed.The menu said John Dory with Langoustine, it was in fact Fish with mousse. I then ordered the Cheese Board for two and quite honestly there was not as much cheese as you would get in an average pub lunch cheese board for one. The surroundings are wonderful but that cannot make up for the deplorable meal
