“Closed for business”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2013

When I arrived with three friends to stay at the Fox and Goose, there were signs in the window saying "closed for business" or words to that effect. It was lunchtime and the place was locked up. We had paid £50 per room for our three rooms so I am now trying to get a refund from the credit card company. We had had no contact from the Fox & Goose. We went to the Halford Bridge Hotel about 5 minutes drive away and were very well looked after there and it turned out to be an excellent swap. Local people had some fascinating things to say about the Fox and Goose.... unsubstantiated, so I fear I can't repeat them.

Room Tip: The Halford Bridge Hotel has the advantage of being open.

Arrived on Friday afternoon for a 2 night stay for a rest and get away from it all break. Again after reading reviews was a bit worried, but no need. Shown to our Col Mustard room. Room was clean, warm and nicely decorated. Like everyone else I loved the roll top bath, which was very decadent. Booked for dinner in the restaurant downstairs for that evening. Sat in the bar before dinner with lovely fire, and a couple of the locals spoke to us. When we were ready for dinner we were shown to our table. As vegetarians it can be hard to find good, interesting food that is something a little different. The meal was superb. The dining area was a cosy, candlelit room, with quiet music playing in the background. The staff were attentive and helpful. We spent the rest of the evening in the bar talking to another couple who were staying for the night and the landlord. Once we decided it was time for bed, he locked up and the place went quiet. It was no exaggeration to say that outside it was dark. There are no street lights anywhere in this hamlet. It's wonderful for the stargazers amongst us.

Breakfast the next morning was fantastic. The thing that will stick out for us during this weekend is the high standard of food. The landlord said if there was anything we wanted and it wasn't on the menu, as long as they could get the ingredients they'd make it for us. I think the comment that the menu wasn't extensive reflects that the food was freshly made and of a high quality. Spent the day in Stratford and having seen the poor weather forecast for snow we decided to eat in the restaurant again. When we arrived for the landlord said that the chef had made an additional vegetarian option in case we decided to stay for dinner, so we didn't have to have the same meal as the night before. This showed so much thought and we really appreciated it. So much so that we just had to have the full 3 courses. Excellent, outstanding food. Again we had a drink in the bar with the landlord and the locals and it was very welcoming.

Another fantastic breakfast the next day and then off to Chipping Campden and Broadway which are both stunning. The Chef and his partner were amazing. Excellent food and service.

The only warning I would give you is the lack of light around the hamlet, and the roads leading to it and from it. I loved it as you could see the night sky brilliantly. Just take a torch if you plan to walk anywhere. I looked out in the middle of the night to see if it was snowing and it was so dark I couldn't tell. The peace and quiet was much needed.

Booked a Groupon weekend and after reading the reviews I was a little wary. On arrival we were greeted by a very pleasant young man and shown to our room which was a little tired and in need of a touch up of paint but clean and comfortable. The rolltop bath was a wonderful treat and the hot water supply endless.......don't forget your candles. The landlord was welcoming, pleasant & chatty and made us feel at home. We ate in the restaurant both nights and the food was excellent and good value......would definately recommend the steak pie, it was to die for. Breakfast was wonderful both mornings, especially the sausages. Ray (the chef) and his partner Sally ann make a great team and they can certainly cook.
Stratford and the surrounding area is a beautiful place to spend the weekend and I would certainly stay at the Fox and Goose again especially if they have any special weekend offers.

We stayed here for 2 nights. Bedrooms are nice and comfortable , light and not too hot . The star point had to be the bath: deep , lashings of hot water and overbath candles for added atmosphere. The restaurant had just been done out and the food was very high quality indeed. Not a huge menu, but what there was was very well presented and well cooked.
Breakfast was plentiful and again, very nicely presented and cooked.
As far as gluten free food went this venue scores `100% . Brilliant attention to detail and very friendly staff. I would thoroughly recommend this for anyone looking for a short break with good food in friendly surroundings.

Room Tip: Colonel mustard room is very nice and light.

Booked on a Groupon offer Bed & breakfast with afternoon tea, we stayed in Mrs Peacocks room which was dark & compact to say the least. However the bed was very comfortable & also had a nice bath but the room could do with some T L C & this is the only downside of our stay.
The owner was away & staff levels were low however Martin & his wife did a great job & provided excellent service nothing was too much trouble. We arrived around half three in the afternoon where we was show to our room & offered our afternoon tea with a selection of sandwiches & cake & choice of teas. We booked a table for evening meal although unnecessary, meals seemed pricey - but credit to Martin well cooked & of good quality & worth it.
Breakfast was very relaxed not rushed & very plentiful with a choice of juices & cereal we had a Full English (one of the best I have tasted in a while) also toast a choice of preserves & offered both teas & coffee.
Would return again in better quality room, preferably not Mrs Peacock & only at the price we paid not full & would definitely return for a meal if Martin's cooking.

We stayed in the Fox and Goose and think the 2 young ladies just got it wrong.
We were greeted on arrival and shown to our room, Prof. Plum! The door opened and wow the room is a glorious shade of plum with a plum coranet headboard picked out in gold, the bathroom had a huge lions foot bath also plum with matching loo seat. The towels were thick and fluffy and we had a good selection of teas, coffees and biscuits also Wenlock water both still and sparkling.
The breakfast was superb and we had the tasties sausages ever, so good we visited their butcher, Davies of Mickleton, and brought some home. The chef/ manager Martin is passionate about good food sourced locally were possible.
The staff were all chatty and interesting, quite a change from some places we've stayed and a rose was sourced from a pub regular to put on the table as a surprise for my husband Roger, now how good is that!!
The second day we had 2 sausages with our freshly cooked breakfast and waddled up to our room.
The only problem was the fact that I felt the menu was too expensive so we ate out which was a shame.
There are masses of places to visit, Stratford, Evesham, Broadway and little villages with lovely stone walls.
So thank you all, and good luck Martin with all your plans.
Just one thing never eat at the White Bear in Shipston absolutly awful.

Room Tip: Our room was delightful and I'm sure the others are too.

The Fox and Goose was perfect for exploring the fairly flat area up to Stratford, across to Leamington Spa and down to Hook Norton (not all on the same day). The route up to Stratford follows a national bike route for part of the way and takes in the off-road Greenway (with old carriage cafes). Followed route via Southam to Leamington - with some canal towpath near Leamington. The Benjamin Satchwell pub on the Parade produced good-value jacket potatoes and refreshing pints of real ale (very welcome 40 miles into the ride)! The food at the Fox and Goose was fine. The good value allowed a trip out to Good Pubs (listed in Guide).
