The White Swan Hotel ( This is not the Dirty Duck as referred to in a recent review) has recently had a major refurbishment and is owned by Fullers. We have used it as a local for many years but not eaten there. We decided to try the food as the new menu looked very interesting and reasonably priced. We were completely amazed by the quality and standard which is fine dining at pub grub prices. The menu is conservative but inventive, exciting and interesting. If I sound like a food critic I make no apologies. The service the first time my husband and I went was poor due to staff shortage but we decided to take some very special guests as the food and experience was so good. We were not let down. There were more staff working and the waitress remembered us and thanked us for returning. One of our guests said the scallops were the best he had ever had and he had eaten in some of the best restaurants. The wild sea trout with savoury panacotta is amazing and the trio of mixed quail gorgeous. We all tried each others starters and mains as we couldn't make our minds up which to have. There is a Fix Prix menu for £15.00 for two courses or £19.00 for three. I hope visitors and locals use this little gem and make it successful in a town where we have too many over priced ostentatious restaurants which do not offer good value for money.
