Stratford, a haunting ground of mine since I was a teenager, has never been blessed with great restaurants, a bit like the train services from London and Birmingham - they run but nothing special and can take a long time. An exception is The Oppo, right next door to its sister restaurant, the slightly more expensive Lamb's. Both are excellent with the Oppo perhaps shading it at the moment with better value and delightfully, nice if sometimes naive service. Was there last night with my aged sister and, as ever, we were treated beautifully and served excellent food. A specialty is the crispy duck which I, more often than not, have a larger portion as a main course. The choice, however, is wide and varied and you will not be let down by the food, the service or the bill! If only the other restaurants and the transport services could keep up with the theatre and Oppo and Lambs.

Spending a couple of days in Stratford for the theatre, we telephoned Embargo (highly recommended and rated) for a Sunday evening reservation. When the lady who answered had greeted us with uncontrollable laughter, she was eventually able to inform us that they were "open but not serving food."

We set out to explore and stumbled across The Oppo - thankyou, Embargo. Seemingly, we were lucky to get a table; while we were there there were seldom vacant tables or more than a few minutes, and we understood why. The food all gave the impression of having been prepared in the kitchen and presented with care. Staff were friendly and courteous, prices were acceptable in relation to quality.

Busy though it was, we never felt under any pressure to leave. Would we return? Most certainly

My wife & I have moved on from 'family friendly' restaurants over the last couple of years & have visited various restaurants with very mixed results.
On 19 Feb 09 we visited The Oppo on the 2nd of 2 nights in Stratford & had one of the most enjoyable meals I can recall.
The staff were all pleasant & friendly but not 'over the top'. Service was prompt & efficient & the quality of the food superb.

We both chose chicken stuffed with ham & Gruyere from the specials menu. I'm not easy to please but this earned 10/10 (a first in my experience). The food was hot & really tasty, accompanied by a generous quantity of chips, & we ordered vegetables to accompany.

Our starters, sweets & the wine were all similarly enjoyable. The cost was very reasonable for this quality. The whole experience was so much better than the dearer meal we had the previous night at our hotel, a very sterile experience.

In summary, If you're staying in Stratford, head for The Oppo & enjoy.

We were recommended to The Oppo by some friends who were in Stratford a few months before us and stumbled in for some food after being to the theatre. They gave us a sterling review of it, and so do we!

We arrived at The Oppo around 10:30pm and were immediately seated. We decided to order two starters, one main from the 'light bites' portion of their menu, and a bottle of wine. The staff let the chef know and he cut the portion into two halfs and presented both halfs beautifully to each of us, which made it feel less like 'sharing'. We really appreciated this extra touch.

We loved the atmosphere at The Oppo. The staff do such a great job of looking after you. Food was good too, but it was really the way we were treated that impressed us.

While not everything is perfect, this continental choice serves very good food and most things coming out of the kitchen look quite good. We had one problem with our dinner and while it only represented a small item on our plate, the kitchen insisted on cooking a new meal from scratch. Friendly, professional staff made it a pleasure.
