“Great Hospitality”
Reviewed 19 March 2012

This is a few minutes from the M40 Jn 15 and is very close to the Centre of Warwick so a really good base for exploring. We stayed Friday and Saturday nights to attend the Edible Garden Show at Stoneleigh Park. The room was comfortable and (a note for the Friday night locals) the breakfast was substantial and very nicely done. The pub itself is spotless, serves six well kept real ales and has really friendly locals. If we lived in Warwick this would be our local.
There is plenty of tea & coffee in the rooms which are very clean.
We intend to return to Warwick next year and will definitely return to the Old Fourpenny Shop. Throughout our stay Sean was a great host even providing free chips and sandwiches for the rugby on St Patrick's day even though his team were being beaten by England.
We both like good pubs and this one is really good and is superbly located for the town centre or to break you journey, so given the location we thought it was good value for money.
The Hotel doesn't do evening meals but there are plenty of other places close by and Sean is happy to recommend one. Just around the corner on the main road the Vine Inn has just re-opened and Tom the Chef there does very nice evening meals (and can modify his menu for Coeliacs).

Room Tip: The rooms at the back are probably quieter

We stayed here for one night as part of my birthday celebrations. The staff were well-organised when we arrived and showed us straight to our room, which was in the courtyard at the back. The room was clean, tidy and quiet. The bar had a good choice of real ales, and we started and ended our evening there. Breakfast was the usual fare - cereal, juice and cooked sausage, bacon, egg, tomato and black pudding, but was good quality and served efficiently by a friendly lady. All-in-all a lovely stay.

I liked the good and authentic atmosphere of the hotel. Hotel keepers are very nice and pleasant. Good beer and good breakfast.
However, walls do not insulate noises (you hear everything your next-room neighbor does) and water pressure in the shower was low (we stayed in the top floor).

Room Tip: If you have heavy suitcases, avoid the top floors.

We stayed for 3 nights in September, to visit Warwick Castle, Cadbury world and Kenilworth Castle with our two children. This was part of a 6 week England and Europe holiday. The 4 person family room located at the back of the hotel was clean, quiet and large. The hotel is in a great location, 5 minute walk through the old town gate to the centre of town and the castle. Breakfast was served in a lovely breakfast room with a great buffet spread, huge cooked breakfast offered and lovely staff. We had a great stay and I highly recommend the hotel. Thankyou so much.

I and various members of my family and I have stayed at The Old Fourpenny on many an occasion. A couple of times this has been over Christmas and being able to stay Christmas Even/Christmas Day is very useful as one of my family lives around the corner but can't manage to accomodate all of the rest of us. The Old Fourpenny then becomes our overflow!

The motel style rooms, which are at the back opposite the car parking, are the rooms I have stayed in. They are always clean, big enough, with ensuite facilities, drink making capability and are very warm with heating that really pumps out (it has been thick with snow in Warwick on two occasions I have stayed).

The owners/staff have always been very welcoming although we havent needed to bother them much except for at breakfast. The breakfast service has always been delicious and served with cheer and politeness. I have had breakfast there on Christmas Day twice and its to a great standard and wonderful service as usual, even though you might expect the service to be less on that day. There is a full english breakfast and variations seem totally acceptable, if you want to leave off the black pudding and chose different eggs or just have bacon etc, and there are cereals and toast (the offering may include more than that but those are the staples I have always had). When I have stayed in the motel style rooms, it has always been quiet enough even though the Old Fourpenny Shop has a lively pub in it, which is located at the front. As you can imagine, the first time we stayed we wondered if Christmas Eve would be awfully loud but it wasn't! Also there is free parking in the courtyard where the motel-style rooms are, which in a town like Warwick where most houses have street parking, it's a brilliant thing. However If you don't have one or don't want to bring a car then the train station is a 10-15min walk down the road and of course the town centre is just about 5 mins up the road and town centre entrance to Warwick Castle is about the same.
I would recommend staying at the Fourpenny for the reasons above and also because of the cost as it is very cheap for town centre accomodation, in my opinion. Also, remember I have stayed at Christmas when I am sure many hotels would be at premium but I am sure the Old Fourpenny's tariff has been basically the same as the rest of the year.
Well done to the owners and staff, who keep putting on a good service for us year in year out!

Room Tip: The motel-style rooms at the back with the car parking, I expect are the most private and the quiete...
