“Grand old world style with all mod-cons...”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

Stayed overnight here in a superior room in the main hotel building. A lovely huge room with equally huge bathroom which was beautifully clean and stylish, although a few other areas of the hotel and grounds could have done with a little more upkeep and there did not seem to be great numbers of staff. Pleasant food at both dinner and breakfast in the grand looking dining room. There are grounds to walk around including some small ruins, but not extensive. There are also spa facilities which we did not use so cannot comment upon. There is a lovely looking old church in front of the hotel within the grounds, but this was locked during our visit. I should imagine it could be ideal for weddings and there was a huge marquee set up next to it. The weather was very hot when we stayed and the room got uncomfortable as the air-conditioning seemed set at one temperature, but this wouldn't put us off staying again as it was very peaceful despite an event being held in the marquee that evening.

We went here at the suggestion of a Groupon offer and had a very lovely time. This hotel feels more personal as it is not one of a big corporate business chain- although it is a little dated, this adds to it's charm. The grounds are pretty, if somewhat overgrown in places. The rooms had old high ceilings and quaint decor but they were very comfortable and peaceful. The service was excellent as was the food, wine and the ambience. 0ur window seat at sunset was very romantic! There is still a feel of the old school that was once housed in this building. The pool also feels as though it is from a different era but was bright and airy. Would have preferred it if some senior staff had not been discussing business over breakfast but hey that is a minor niggle. Close to Warwick and Leamington Spa with some good little antique shops if you like that sort of thing.

Room Tip: ask for a room looking onto the garden

Rooms were weirdly decorated, 90 curtains and bedding with gorgeous old furniture! Horrible view over bins from kitchen and noisy broken air conditioning unit. Good job we took ear plugs. Staff were great, breakfast was okay and the food in evening felt a little mass produced. Swimming pool was lovely and I had a full body massage which was great!

We went for a weekend in May, first impressions were that the hotel was very dated, dark and definitely not a spa hotel. Our room in the main building was ok, beds comfy but a very dated bathroom and useless shower. The main restaurant was closed as they were having a champagne dinner night so that was the only food option available. We went along anyway and had to sit at a huge table of 20+ people. The food was average and it was a good night but I would have preferred to eat just the two of us rather than be forced to sit with 20 strangers or even have the option of having a meal elsewhere....but we had no option or else we wouldn't have had dinner! Our bad luck I suppose we picked that weekend.

Also very cheesed off that we didn't get a proper breakfast as our deal wasn't breakfast included and I wasn't prepared to pay £12 each to eat breakfast so we only had a bit of toast and tea....then found out at check out that we could have had the full breakfast included as they didn't realise our deal didn't include it.

The so called spa was in a tired conservatory and a joke as spas go, freezing pool, Luke warm jacuzzi tiny sauna, tiny gym with a treadmill and a bike...only 4 loungers to sit on.... It was more like a leisure club than a spa. They seriously need to look at what other hotels offer in their spa's as this was just rubbish!

Oh and to top it off our room was next to the honeymoon suite which has it's own jacuzzi... Lovely if you are in it except the noise the jacuzzi makes is horrendous and the vibrations came through the wall to our headboard! We rang switchboard who offered no solution at all... Thankfully we brought ear plugs!

Wasn't the worst hotel I've ever been to but wouldn't recommend it!

This review from a stay in May was obviously an unfortunate situation, where the offering did not suit the particular guest. The Champagne night is one of the hugely popular, paired wine and food dinners, held at Wroxall. The format and seating have been refined over many such events in response to guest feedback and requests. The evening included seven glasses of different champagnes, each matched to a particular dish on the menu, designed to offer good value for the specific event. Alternative arrangements could have been made had the issue been raised at the time.
Our Leisure Club & Spa is not large commercial environment, but an intimate country house experience, offering a range of quality ESPA treatments and personal service, which is usually welcomed by customers.

We held a wedding at Wroxall recently which throughout the process we were fooled into believing would be as amazing as the surroundings but unfortunately we were completely let down. This was bought through a package similar to that advertised on their website with tweaks to suit our requirements of using three buildings on the site. The cathedral is beautiful and the vicar and his wife are lovely which made this part of the day extremely memorable. The care and attention to detail displayed by Wroxall staff was extremely poor and shouldn't be inflicted on any guest to a venue or hotel, especially on their wedding day.
We have tried to reason with the hotel about their lack of care and attention on the day and how they reneged on verbal agreements throughout the planning process but we are still waiting on a response. With the three wedding planners that we met a number of agreements were made so my advice for prospective couples is to gain all agreements in writing. The venue was extremely cold on the day despite promises throughout the planning process regarding heaters being placed in the marquee which was surprisingly warm on the wedding fayre days that we attended. Wroxall advertise this as an all year structure so you would expect adequate heating to be in place.

In all it has lovely surroundings, but the venue is desperately let down by their heating policy and most significantly the attitude and care of hotel staff. We have been left with bad memories of our wedding day. Not something we feel anyone else should go through.

In the middle of what has been a hot summer, we were disappointed to see a repeat of this wedding comment from last winter. Unfortunately, the couple had much greater demands than were offered in the discounted Groupon wedding package. The issues raised, were generally beyond Wroxall’s remit and control, and despite offering a goodwill payment, sadly this was not accepted.

We stayed just for one night for a friends wedding, we only had ten minutes to get in our room get changed and leave for the wedding again, but as soon as we walked in we were shocked at how tiny the room was for the money and it had been discounted! I would have definitely complained had it been full price but for £115.00 it was still steep for what we had.
I imagine you're paying for the location and grounds or maybe the rooms in the main hotel are better. The bathroom was modern but the room was very dated (and not in an old fashioned take your breath away way).

I wish I could remember his name, but the chap serving in the bar which was still open when we returned from the wedding was fab. He was an older gentleman and couldn't have been more welcoming, friendly and entertaining, even into the early hours!

My husband isn't half as fussy as I can be and even he said we've stated in a hell of a lot nicer hotels for less!

So to summarise, we may have just been unlucky with the room but I heard another moan about how tiny they are. And one more point that the wroxhall should consider before there is a serious accident is the window in the room which is large and slides all the way up! The level it is situated at is an accident waiting to happen! With guests staying at weddings who have had a few too many or having the blind shut and forgetting its open is a total disaster waiting to happen!

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at Wroxall Abbey. Firstly may I take the opportunity to thank you for highlighting a member of the team for special praise. The person in question is a long serving employee at Wroxall who receives many such comments and I will ensure yours too are passed on to him.
In terms of the bedroom, I apologise that this did not meet your expectations. I am unable to locate the particular room number stayed in, however had Reception or the Duty Manager been aware of issues at the time they would have done their best to find an alternative for you. Also the discounted room rate quoted does include buffet and full English cooked breakfast for two people, which gives good value compared to other hotels in the area.
Generally guests appreciate the character and quality of the Grade II listed buildings and naturally the large windows have been preserved and restored in the otherwise unchanged external appearance. Likewise the interior of the building is sympathetically designed to incorporate modern bathrooms and fittings, but styled with period furniture, again to reflect the historic nature of the Estate.

If you like a lovely old building, with history, this is for you. Don't expect clean lines, perfect decor, and nothing out of place as this is not what they are about. This is the perfect place for a wedding, venue superb and has its own Wren's cathedral opposite, 200yds! A beautiful place to get married. Hotel was clean, accommodating, lovely staff, great food, can't say enough about it. It has everything. Enjoy!
