We arrived in Warwick without any reservations, and so walked down this street because it had many B&B's. All of the pretty ones were booked. Others simply had no answer at the door. We came to Ashburton, and figured we were desperate, but again, nobody answered the door. There was a note in the window saying that if nobody answered, to run across the street to the pub to get help. So we did.
We walked in the pub and conversation stopped. It was very uncomfortable. We got the attention of the bartender and she checked the availability. She made sure everyone in the pub was OK for the moment (including the older man in a stupor with his head on the bar) and we all walked back across the street. She let us in and opened the door to the common room. I got a glimpse of a girl puffing on a cigarette before the bartender quickly closed the door again. The smell wafting out of the common room was indicative of heavy smoking. This surprised me, as every other B&B we stayed in had signs saying it was illegal to smoke inside.
The bartender offered us the twin room for 55 pounds, but knocked it down to 50 when we told her we didn't want breakfast. We walked back across the street to the pub and paid for the room.
The room was clean and comfortable, but we never lost that feeling of unease. The bathroom was not as tiny as I expected it to be, and the towels were quite nice. We could hear other people returning to the B&B later that night, but we never saw anybody else. When we left in the morning, there didn't seem to be anybody around. I simply left our room key on the desk in the hallway and hoped for the best. (as my credit card wasn't charged for any further nights, I think that I'm in the clear!)
It was cheap, it was clean, it had off-street parking, but I would not stay there again just because of the smoking and the peculiar arrangements. I prefer a place that has staff on premises.
