Review of Mowgli Street food

Mowgli Street food
Ranked #293 of 2,517 Restaurants in Birmingham
Price range: US$8 - US$15
Description: The home of Tiffin Mowgli is all about how Indians eat at home and on their streets. She was born to feed the raw need Indians have for tiffins full of fresh bright intense flavour. Mowgli is not about the intimate, hushed dining experience. It is about the smash and grab zing of healthy, light, virtuosic herbs and spices.

I tried this restaurant out for the first time recently after always passing and never going in. I went with my partner on a weekday evening and the restaurant was fairly quiet. The host showed us to our table and then the waiter came to take our order in due time. We placed our drink and food order at the same time. As the restaurant is street food the dishes come out "as and when" and not necessarily all together which is perfectly acceptable. However by the time our first dish arrived (around 30 minutes after we had placed the order) we still had no drinks. I then asked the waiter where the drinks were to which he asked us for out order again. Then the drinks arrived with the remainder of the food. After we finished a number of waiters and the manager who was on shift that night glanced over at our table full of dirty dishes and not one single one came over to clean it. I also noticed a man who wanted to dine alone waiting at the door for the host for over 15 minutes before he had to proceed into the restaurant himself to get a staff members attention, only to be turned away as they said they were no longer seating people after the time (I believe it was around 9:30). All the waiters were casually strolling around and laughing and joking with one another (as the restaurant was relatively quiet) yet not a single one came to clear our table. At this point I was extremely infuriated as a number of staff members had given me direct eye contact and looked at our full table and still did not come to clear it. I then got out of my seat and went to raise the issue with the manager. The manager on shift was completely un-bothered by this and merely said "it wont happen next time" when taking payment. No compassion or apology. Definitely will not be returning to this restaurant!

Great interiors and good-looking menu expectations were high. Fell flat. Popped in for a quick lunch. Was quiet but service was awful. Ordered 2 starters/chaat. Chaat bombs lacked flavour and texture, just full of yoghurt. Cheese on toast took 40 mins to come out but was ok. No apologies for slow service. Won't be returning

You can always tell if the food in a restaurant is good by the number of dinner's waiting for a table.

We had booked so that was not a problem.

Mowgli is a fusion of Indian tapas and the sort of Street food we had when traveling in India.

The food was excellent and Aunty Greta's prawns were a treat.

We had a selection of dishes and the rice and roti bread.

The portions were a bit small for me and a little bit on the pricey side considering the sizes.only 3 bits of Lamb and chicken in the portions

But well worth the money, however £4.70 for a bottle of beer was over the top.

The restaurant was clean and tidy.

The staff were really friendly

Mowgli is experience dining

Well worth the visit and a must for the experience

We stopped here for lunch during a shopping day out... From the outset it looked like an interesting place with a nice ambience and some thought had gone into the interior.... Overall the service was good... We had the chip butty wrap and the lamb chops for starters from the street food menu... together it was way too many potatoes... the lamb chops looked a good size however had a lot of fat which I’m not partial to.., cooked okay. We then had the prawn curry and chicken ginger curry - both were acceptable... we ordered these with rice and purees which were light and crisp... overall a nice experience, worth a visit but doubt it’s ever going to be on my return list.....

We were greeted at the door as soon as we arrived by a chap allied Joe, who served us throughout the evening, and we bought was the perfect balance of helpful, friendly, relaxed and professional. Great start.

And making our way to the table the restaurant felt different to the norm, with some swing seats, lights on glass bottles, rope dividers etc and lots of nice natural surfaces, and serving dishes.

We had our order taken quite quickly, tap water provided at the table and the food came relatively quickly.

The food didn’t seem quite as fresh or authentic as the Manchester version we had been to before, or as good as an alternative similar establishment in Birmingham that we were impressed with.

Specifically, we thought the bombs were not quite as crispy and fresh as they could be, the raita quite ordinary, the chicken in the curry slightly dry and over cooked, and the lassi a bit disappointing.

The chicken thighs were better, and the skin was delicious, and the lamb curry was a bit tastier and juicier but still nothing special.

Glad to have tried it, but not in a rush to return.
