This is just the place to stay overnight after a tiring journey and before a challenging ahead. A spacious room with generous cupboard space, worktable, tea/coffee/chocolate facilities - and a delightful little bookshop where I bought an inspiring book of poems.

We stayed at Woodbrooke over the weekend of January 24th and it was as good as I remembered it - maybe even better thanks to the addition of the garden lounge. The staff were wonderful, the food great, and all that alongside a superb library and those enjoyable gardens. Definitely a great place to stay when visiting Birmingham.

Head and shoulders above other B&Bs. Spotless rooms, beautiful gardens, delicious food, the best staff ever. I've stayed here a number of times, and I always run into interesting people to chat with at meals. Consistent excellence throughout. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We stayed for four days and as ever cannot praise it too highly. It is a beautiful, early Victorian mansion set in ten acres of stunning gardens with a small lake that guests are welcome to row a boat on. The staff are unfailingly courteous and helpful and the rooms are warm and spotlessly clean. When you stay at Woodbrooke you are free to use two excellent guest lounges, including a stunning garden lounge with a roaring wood fire. Included with your bed and breakfast are complimentary, excellent, teas, hot chocolates, mid-morning and mid-afternoon freshly baked biscuits and cake and fruit you can help yourself to anytime. For children, as well as the attraction of the grounds and frequent trips for hot chocolates etc. there are also traditional games in the basement such as pool and table tennis and Cadbury World and the pretty village of Bourneville are 10 minutes walk away. Guests are welcome to use the excellent library and borrow books during their stay. Woodbrooke is run by the Quakers. This is in no way foisted upon guests. There is no drinking at Woodbrooke, but there is also a wonderful atmosphere of peace and friendliness. The food is superb and is served buffet style. The breakfasts are hearty and very good value. If you opt in for lunch or dinner you will be delighted as the food is fresh, often sourced from Woodbrooke's own kitchen garden and very tasty. If you were in Birmingham to work, study or enjoy a holiday with your family you could really do no better. For the same price as sitting on your bed in an anonymous travel lodge of some sort you can be watching the kingfishers skim over the lake from the garden lounge in front of the roaring fire sipping your coffee. All this ten minutes from New Street station.

Although it was not cold they kept a lovely fire banked up in the lounge just because ' diddums was cold"
The accommodation and food was as ever, excellent. This is the one place I would come alone. Company if you want it, peace and quiet if you don't

Friends in residence wonderful and cheerful- this is a Quaker establishment!

My daughter was scheduled for surgery locally, so I was looking for a b&b to stay over. As a Christian I was pleased to book here, and the stay was truly perfect. A lovely quiet room, the chance to walk beautiful gardens, excellent food and really friendly staff. Far better than an impersonal budget chain. It really was the ideal way to stay locally, with a marvellous en suite haven of peace.

Hi Shirley

We’re glad you found us, and thanks so much for taking the time to review. Our location near several hospitals means that we do offer a convenient place to stay for people with friends or relatives as patients. All of us here will be happy to hear that your stay was a good one, even though the circumstances weren’t really those of a holiday. I hope your daughter is recovering well.

Firstly, travellers need to be aware this is a Quaker residential college and does feel like it: b and b guests are very welcome and those who enjoy organic food, tranqil surroundings, the opportunity to chat with other guests, a lovely garden and no night life will enjoy their stay enormously. It is not a commercial business but a charitable concen with courses held throughout the year(especially weekends) alongside the hospitality activities. It is not a budget hotel option.
There is no alcohol licence, no TV/radios in the rooms, no gym or swimming pool but a lake you can row on, all meals are completely self service taken at communal tables with rather restricted times(but very nice food but only two main meal choices, meat or veggie) and most of the people "working" there, especially those you see at the weekends apart from the professional kitchen/catering staff, are Quaker volunteers( very kind, helpful and friendly). Whilst children would be very welcome, I think they and their parents might feel a bit "overpowered" by the atmoshere of calm peace and quiet.
It is very easy to get to on the bus down the Bristol Road from Birmingham City Centre(£2), and there is plenty of parking. The grounds provide pleasant walks and there are also longer walks available from the site.(to Cadbury World etc, which might attract families). Because of the late(7.45am) breakfast start, it would not be very suitable for business trips, and I think the evening meal runs only 6.15 to 7.30pm so no late and lenghty dinners available(also no alcohol). As I said, you have to queue up with trays for all courses at all meals. Tea/coffee available in rooms or the lounge at all times(free)
For and old building, very good attempts have been made to make the place fully accessible to all. Some bedrooms in the main house suffer badly from noise from the A38 but those in Holland House are generally very peaceful. This is a very different Birmingham b and b experience from any to be had in the city centre hotels.

Room Tip: Away from the A38 if you don't like noise. Garden facing if you like gardens.

Hi Gilly

Thank you for the time you’ve taken to give such a thorough review of Woodbrooke and for the information you’ve provided on buses and parking – I am sure that potential visitors will find this helpful.

As you say, bed and breakfast guests are very welcome, and our aim is to offer visitors a slightly more personal welcome than they might get elsewhere, whether it is from our Quaker volunteers or permanent staff. We do have a large team of staff working 9-5 and some staff working in the evenings and weekends, and there is always a Duty Manager member of staff available on-site. We are a bit different from a budget hotel, as you rightly point out, and we hope that these differences are on the whole attractive to visitors (such as our 10-acre organic gardens and the food, most of which is freshly prepared on the premises from locally-sourced ingredients). We would like to think that people on a budget can also enjoy a value-for-money stay here. Woodbrooke is both a charity (a Quaker study centre) and a commercial business (bed and breakfast and a venue for meetings and conferencing). We do welcome children and are looking at how we can make Woodbrooke more family-friendly in terms of activities.

I will pass your feedback on mealtimes and noise to our Head of Services for consideration – thank you for sharing it. We recently changed our policy on check-out times in response to visitor feedback as we aim to respond to the needs of our visitors. Our policy here at Woodbrooke is that we don’t allow the consumption of alcohol in our public spaces – but many people do find they are still able to relax, take time out and enjoy the inspiring ambience and environment.

I hope that I am right in thinking that your rating suggests that – in the main – you enjoyed your stay, and we’d be delighted to see you back here when you’re next in Birmingham.
