Visited Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in May 2014 and thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon there.

Started with tea and (excellent) cake in the charming cafe and then viewed the art. Lots of interesting paintings from different eras and genres - usefully divided into chronological periods.

Upstairs there is a a really good display of Birmingham through the ages - from Middle Ages to present day - incluidng the war years which are particularly poignant at the moment!

My favourite part was the pictures and displays from Birmingham in 80's and 90's as I knew it including many pics of the old city centre.

We popped in to see the Staffordshire Hoard, which takes a bit of finding, but was very interesting. It'll be even better when its new permanent exhibition opens.

The building is very grand - far surpassing what a visitor from London might expect to find in this most underrated city. The cafe, set in a stunning galleried hall, is great value and worth seeking out even if you're not visiting the museum. In fact, for a free attraction, BMAG is a gem!

Good sized museum and art gallery with some real treasures.
The hoard was breathtaking!! The building is a museum by itself.
Lunch in the cafe was way better than usual for such places also

Museum is very central and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable. Was fascinated by the recent find by a metal detector enthusiast.... Wow! what a find. Well worth it for this alone.

There were some great exhibits which would cater to those interested in art and there was an exhibition of Japanese art when we visited.
