“reasonable room lousy breakfast”
Reviewed 21 January 2011

Room was fresh and well presented but had to turn off air conditioning/heater as too noisy and woke up to a very cold room but no other noise depsite central position.. The breakfast was mediocre unless you like Kellogs cereals of which there was the usual suspects plus many extras. Hot food was missing several offerings at 0900 which by the time thye were replenished it was too late. Tea comes in mug from a machine by the taste of it and that only came by persuing a member of staff.

The hotel is close to the city centre (as the name suggests!). There is no car park but the entrance to the NCP multi-storey car park (£16 for 24 hours) is literally seconds from the entrance to the hotel. Our room was at the front of the hotel and overlooking a main road but we were not troubled by traffic noise at all. The rooms are modern, clean and well appointed with flat screen tv. Breakfast was excellent with quick and courteous service. A much better than expected experience. All other staff were polite and efficient. You might gather we were pleased with our choice of hotel for our one night visit to Birmingham. You would be right :-)

Stayed at the holiday inn City Centre a few times with work recently, and I have been disappointed on a few occasions.
Do not stay on the front of the hotel on a room below about the 7th floor. The noise is dreadful, near to a nightclub which throws out student revellers between 1am and 4am most week nights, also alot of beeping horns. The housekeeping can be poor at times, quite a few hairs found in the bathroom on arrival and only bed made and towels replaced during week.
Check in can be slow and priority desk not attended.
On the positive note, the breakfast is excellent and most staff are friendly. I have stayed in much better holiday inns.

No problem to find.....just a problem parking. Hotel does not have its own car park, you have to use the NCP car park next door, that was a bit of a pain especially as we arrived on Boxing day and the sales were on. We we allowed to park outside the Hotel for FREE which would usually cost 17.50 (Pounds).....that was a good start. We were greeted warmly at reception and were given our keys. We had to take our own bags up to the rooms.....no porter....lifts to all floors. Our non-smoking rooms where located on the 8th floor. The hallway was a little shabby, we were greeted by large cleaning carts which looked more at home at a hospital when we exited the lift, they were never moved for the 24 hours that we were there. The rooms were great, very modern and well decorated. We had a large very comfortable double bed with six pillows, flatscreen TV and a clean modern bathroom.......shower worked a treat. The bar was not open in the day due to staff shortages and closed at promptly at 21:00 . We tried to get food ordered just before 21:00 for one of our party but was told that the Chef leaves at 21:00.....good for the Chef, bad for us. Don´t worry, China Town is just around the the corner....great food. Breakfast was served in a large modern setting, food and selection was good. Bed and breakfast was 75 Pounds per room. An ideal stopover if you need to walk to the shops

You never know what to expect with Holiday Inn, and I've stayed in a few. From the exterior, this is a noticeably old property. The lobby area has been renovated and looks clean and modern. This modernisation hadn't made it as far as our room on the 5th floor.

We were in town for a show at the (very) nearby Alexandra theatre. The hotel location was perfect for this, and very close to New Street station (a few minutes walk from each). There is parking almost next door in a single story lot, it was £14 for 24 hours (although the machines don't make this clear - some parking attendants happened to be there and reassured us).

Checkin was fast and uncomplicated. The reception staff were pleasant and friendly. The twin room was basic, although pretty tired with general signs of neglect, but it served its purpose. Nothing special, not bad enough to get upset about. Good sound and heat insulation, however the minibar cupboard was empty. Decent water pressure in the shower, but the sink was cracked and the bathroom door didn't lock.

The hotel advertise free wifi, it worked, but was unreliable and slow. I'm a geek, so that annoyed me. I had to revert to 3G. There was a vending machine by the lifts selling things like toothpaste and plasters, and a cash machine (but it charged £1.85 per transaction).

We asked for a late checkout (12 noon is standard) but were denied - they had reduced cleaning staff over the Christmas period. This also meant other services were reduced or cancelled (no room service at all, for example). I suppose this wouldn't matter at other times of year. We had dinner in chinatown just across the street, and walked to the nearby Bullring shopping centre for breakfast so didn't eat at the hotel at all.

For a last minute booking at £50 for a twin (room only), I have no real complaints. Overall I'm pretty indifferent about this hotel - it didn't make it onto my 'avoid' list, but I would probably sample something else next time (There is a very new looking Radisson Blu almost next door)

Stayed here for one night whilst visiting relatives over Christmas. Booked through a well known website and got an excellent rate compared to the walk-in rates advertised. Room was reasonable size; bathroom was quite small but shower was hot and powerful, free showergel and reasonably soft towels! Modern fittings/furnishing etc. made it feel more expensive than it was.

Two gripes (1) our bed appeared huge but turned out to be two singles pushed together to make a double; (2) no hot chocolate in the room - I will forgive them this as it was the Christmas period and they were expecting a delivery!

Would stay again if could get the same discounted rates as its excellent value for money compared to other budget hotels. A very comfortable stay all in all.

Its years since I stayed at a Holiday Inn. This was for a Friday night out in Birmingham and not wanting to drive home. I had checked the other hotels in the area and needed something close to where I was going and this was a 5 min walk away. There were other hotels, but they were the other side of the dual carriageway and in slightly more dubious surroundings. The hotel was very busy with a number of christmas party functions and lots of people at check in, but I was in my room within a few minutes of arriving. I was very surprised at the room, it was really very good, well refurbished and clean. After my night out I perhaps shouldn't have been surprised to find a doorman checking who was going in! I had a standard room and the bed was huge. Had a great nights sleep and fortunately din't get up too late, because housekeeping were banging on the door at 8.30. I wouldn't have been happy if I had wanted to lay in. I would advise putting the do not disturb sign on the door in the future. Breakfast was pretty good, fairly standard stuff, but welcome. However you don't get your own pots of T&C, but they pour from a large pot. Overall a pleasant on nighter and on this showing I don't think it will be so long before using Holiday Inn again. NCP car park just a few feet away, very convenient - the hotel quote £14 for 24 hours or overnight, in fact it was £16. They have a deal with another car park, but is further away.
