There was a time when Copthorne used to be a premium hotel brand, though you wouldn't know that from its Birmingham hotel. For a start, it's in the middle of two dual carriageways, with subways and overpass to reach the other sides. The service was ok, friendly enough. But the rooms and corridors are outdated and feel like a flashback to 1995 when everything was pastel! Rooms were ok for cleanliness and comfort, but you wouldn't want to spend any time in them.
But the breakfast was poor. It's just lazy and smacks of poor customer service to serve fruit that's not ripe, coffee that is mostly hot water, 'fresh' orange juice that has been watered down and cheap bacon and sausages. I was considering giving the thai/malay restaurant a go, but as the breakfast was so bad, I didn't think it was worth the risk.
To be honest though, Birmingham seems to have a bit of a problem-I stayed at the Thistle last week and that was only marginally better and the Travelodge on Broad St is pretty grim too. Ramada is the pick of those I've tried, but generally Brum needs to get its act together for business-class hotels as it's well behind other UK cities at the moment.More
