Owner description: Tour the home of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809,) made famous for his associations with James Watt and the Lunar Society, which left his mark on industrial development in Birmingham.

We had fun finding this place, especially as a couple of signs had been turned round. It's not in the nicest of areas, but having said all that it's worth the effort. This house now sits squashed between later victorian/edwardian housing and only hints at it's former grandeur and importance. It has been beautifully restored, and you get a real feel of what it was like to live here (especially the marvellous early 'central' heating system!)

I think going on an event day would be a good idea, something that brings it more to life

We had to cram this and Aston Hall(must see) into the afternoon as both only open at Noon. It's no longer free entry, and cost £4 for adults.
N.B Tea shop only sells teas, coffees, biscuits and ice cream.

I am writing a review 18 months after visiting Soho House. I can't believe that it is 14th in the ratings. Unfortunately the location does not make it easily accessible to visitors without transport and the area is rather intimidating for people not familiar with the city. But it is worth the effort to try to get there. It explains how the city achieved its status as the centre of the manufacturing industry and what Boulton and Watt achieved along with the Lunar society is impressive even by today's standards. This is a must see attraction if you have an interest in history.

This is a nice little manor house nicely hidden from the main streets of Birmingham. The attraction is free to enter as it is run and maintained by Birmingham City Council. The home was previously the home to Matthew Boulton, who paired up with James Watt to industrialise the world.

The site features a recently built entrance and visitor centre, but the real gem is the house itself. Unfortunately much of the house has since been demolished, when the wings were removed. The main part of the house is still intact and very much a treasure.

It is fascinating to see the room where the Lunar Society, the great debating society of the greatest minds of the world, met. There are intricately designed columns and ceilings in the house and really add architectural merit to the building.

Definately worth a morning/afternoon venture.
