Some years ago the Tyburn had an excellent reputation so, finding ourselves in the area and wanting lunch, we decided to try it out. The outside was a bit foreboding, litter in the car park, peeling paintwork, etc. We should have turned back at the door, it was dingy, dirty threadbare carpet, dark, 1950's décor and virtually no customers for the lone barmaid to serve. Ordered drinks first, then main courses, strictly 'pay-as-you-go', no tabs, I don't think the barmaid even understood that concept! Very mediocre Fish Goujons sandwich (bread, no butter/mayo) with an excuse for salad, the 'free' drink was charged for! Gammon steak was very fatty and had no resemblance whatsoever with the picture on the menu, came with reheated chips. The 99p ice cream desserts were not bad.
Only when we were leaving did I notice the vermin bait box under our table on the dirty, ragged carpet.
The 'piece de resistance' was the toilets. Notices proclaimed that they were inspected 'regularly' - definitely not a synonym for 'frequently', unless the inspector was blind! No paper in ladies or gents, peeling wallpaper and filthy stainless steel trough type urinal in gents with an interesting array of badly filled holes where an array of earlier (prehistoric?) fittings had been crudely removed. Fortunately it was lunch time, so the absence of light bulbs was not a problem!
Definitely a no-no, avoid at all costs!
