“Funky hotel but too noisy!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2013

First impressions really good. Quiet location about 10mins walk from temple row area. Funky reception, quick check in. Loved the room -feels like a ships cabin, which I guess is the point... Purple lighting, huge bed slotted against the wall, which felt really cosy and great rain shower. Not fussed that the whole bathroom got soaked, you expect that. Only drawback is that the walls were paper thin. We heard next doors conversation at 1am as well as the people in their room on the other side of the corridor! The hotel can't help people being noisy but you generally don't hear anything like that in premier inns etc. And at 8.30 this morning, heard every shower, hair dryer and person leaving the hotel!!
So, recommended if you don't mind noise. Otherwise, a lovely hotel.

I stayed one night in mid-November. I paid £49, I booked less than a week before staying there. The rooms are very small - but this is clear from the web site. It was spotlessly clean, the bed was comfortable and there were plenty of towels. The shower was great but it does make everything damp. There was the smallest of desks and no tea/coffee. The addition of tea and coffee would be really good. I was on my own but felt quite safe walking into town from there. The receptionists were not particularly friendly. All in all it was absolutely fine if all you want to do is shower and sleep.

First of all I would like to say it was very very clean on arrival thats always a good start.
Rooms are small but it is clearly marked and I have to be honest and say ME AND MY PARTNER LOVED IT!. I like the fact its small and cosy with a massive tv at the end of the bed and air con to keep the room cool.
Everyone was nice to us and we felt relaxed and comfortable for our stay.
Shower was brilliant :-)

Few negatives.

I paid the extra for the window-Really wish it would open a little bit.

Tea and Coffee can be purchased from the reception for £1. It was nice enough but having to go up and down to reception everytime i fancied a cuppa was a pain, I had a morning free on saturday going to reception for a brew was a chore.

Aircon turns off randomly-so room gets really hot also its not very strong.

Asked for my room to be sorted on saturday before I went into town and whilst it was cleaned up, I didnt get a clean bed sheet, i spilt a bit of tea on it so it needed changing, it was very clear-its hard not to spill things in a room so small :-p

The rooms are quite in general but I did have the misfortune of hearing another guest who was having a fantastic time for about 2 minuites- either that or her partner was murdering her :-).

On a whole it was fine and we will definalty be back !!!!

Thank you for your review and constructive feedback. The reason as to why the windows do not open is to make the AC/climate control efficient as possible. So as the hotel can work towards being environmentally friendly the AC is set on a timer taking into account check-in times and check out times. This can be over ridden should a guest require the AC to be on more frequently. Thank you for making us aware that your bed sheet was not changed. Stay over sheets should get changed every 2 days unless there is a mark on the sheet like you mention. I will investigate this with housekeeping for the oversight, apologies for this.
Hopefully you will be back soon & hopefully this time you will not have noisy neighbours!

So, we stayed at bloc hotel on Saturday night 16th November
Me and my boyfriend arrived and checked in with receptionist... Well- miserable one, very sharp and not very good at greeting guests at all.
We had superior room booked (the one with quite big and very comfortable bed as also window).
This hotel is definitely not a good for a long stay- very claustrophobic and lacking space if you got big language .
It's very clean and modern though, with amazing rain shower . One very weird and quite surprising thing is- shower, as also toilet and sink is in same kind of space so when u having shower in a wet room, all of the other features getting soaked including whole floor, toilet roll, sink and all of ur stuff , you would leave there whilst showering- basicly - very poor design for this kind of modern hotel- (having shower and, to get back there for a toilet, u have to dry the floor first..?-Simply annoying. )
The rest very smart and functional including aircon, build -in telly etc.

Whilst waiting for our taxi in very modern and comfortable foyer, only thing what could put me off , was thr receptionist again-
talking on her personal phone ,speaking in foreign language, and not expecting anyone around could possibly
Understan and be the same nationality as her-
Very unprofessional especially when using foul language..- not good at all- I would certainly recommend to retrain the lady .
The whole experience and stay really good and recommended to anyone who likes trying new stuff as hotel is very unusual and worth trying if u in town for a Shopping spree or a night out. Thanks

Thanks you for your comments regarding your hotel stay experience. What I am sorry to hear of is the service that you received from one of our receptionists as this is not acceptable especially when the receptionist is the first person you see and the last person you encounter whilst staying at the hotel. Please rest assured that the receptionist in question has been spoken to and retrained to BLOC standards.

Stayed Saturday 9th November paid £85.00. Receptionist needs some training in meeting and greeting, took payment before we set foot into our double room, she did not even break a smile, very rude and abrupt. No tea, coffee facilities in room. So claustrophobic there should be a health warning in the hotel information, Wanted to leave the room and sit downstairs for the night. Too expensive, and will definitely not recommend this hotel. Would not wish that experience on anyone!

I'm sorry to hear that BLOC Birmingham was not to your liking. I take your comments on board regarding the receptionist and can sure you this is completely out of character and retraining is being issued. There are no tea and coffee facilities in the room however it can be purchased from the reception area.

Stayed just for one night on a visit to see Mickey Flanagan at the NIA. Very comfy room with the most fantastic rainfall shower in the compact wet room. Very friendly, helpful staff. A 15 min walk to the arena or a fiver in a taxi. Parked in the nearby NCP car park for which the hotel gave a substantial discount! Would definitely recommend for a short city visit.

we stayed sat 9th nov .2 couples in 2 rooms.
receptionist was not very welcoming, quite abrupt and very miserable.
she obvously didnt want to be there.
there had been a mix up and 4 rooms had been reserved .we were 2 couples so only booked 2 rooms.
the receptionist was makng such a big deal about it,my husband had started to make calls to find another hotel.
it seemed a huge problem for her to sort out.
we decided to stay as we were already there and didnt wish to spend our leisure time finding alternative accomodation
not a good first impression for visitors to birmingham, good job we know and love birmingham.
rooms very small and compact ,very clean, comfy bed, nice fluffy towels beautiful bed linen.
rooms very noisy,211 and 210.end of corridor.heard lots of doors banging and a couple having a row.did hear the night receptionist come up and sort it out.
this guy was very plesant and had had a chat with us when we returned from our night out and had coffee.
not hotels fault couple rowing in corridor.but rooms have thin walls .
not sure if we would stay here again after such a poor welcome on arrival.shame really as we stay often.
hotel a little bit out but only short taxi ride into centre.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your stay at BLOC Hotel Birmingham. First of all please rest assured that the receptionist in question has been spoken to regarding her customer service and is currently being retrained. Secondly the receptionist should have explained to you a little more about the time it took to sort your booking. Firstly she would have had to of looked into how you made the booking as if this hadn't have been picked up that you had booked more rooms than you needed at the time of booking, you would not want to be charged for them. Also the details and confirmation would have had to of been checked. I'm sure if this had been explained to you on arrival you may of been a little more understanding however I do appreciate that the customer service you received from the beginning was far from satisfactory which probably did not help the situation.

Bloc hotel is located in Birminghams Jewellery Quarter. The village atmosphere created by its cafes-bars and restaurants is complemented by the business-shopping-arts and sports facilities that are also on its doorstep. We have taken loose inspiration from Japanese pod style hotels which means much larger rooms more akin to a cabin on a luxury yacht with finishes and fittings to match. The rooms are equipped with a King Size Double Bed-luxurious linen-climate control-wet room with monsoon drench shower-Samsung 32inch led flat screen TV and high speed WIFI.
