“Charge more money for rooms get different class of people in here.”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

We'll what can I say about this fantastic place. As you first walk into the bloc you can see the class from the reception area all the way to the slick coffee machine.receptionists are also very helpful and nice. Skip all that stuff on to the rooms. The room I stayed in was a room with a window but really don't think it would matter if u had a window or not cause the rooms are incredible all the way from floor to ceiling wall to wall the shower is mint u get the choice of 2 shower heads the monster one or the standard shower head which I found myself stood and sat for about an hour. Then finally the bed I'm a good 6 ft lay down my feet don't even reach the bottom very comfy soft sheets air cons pukka.

My only negative thing to say is about how cheap the place is. the kind of people you get in here for the quality of the hotel is all wrong. I'm no snob
I would pay £95/£150 and I do believe that in charge in that would bring different kind of people

but it's a great experience and your getting a bargain so all the people saying the rooms are to small you can see your other partner on the toilet no you can't your paying next to nothing for a quality place so give it a try.

Thank you very much for your review. I am pleased to hear that you like the hotel and I will pass on your kind comments to the team.
With regards to your comments to the price of the hotel being too cheap I will have to agree with you however we have to in quiet times remain competitive within the city and this unfortunately means dropping our rates to do so.
We look forward to you returning to BLOC Hotel Birmingham in the near future.

I've never stayed anywhere before quite like Bloc. The nearest hotel for comparison that I have stayed in is one of the Yotel hotels at a UK airport. However, the rooms are slightly larger at Bloc, but you can still only get out of bed on one side and rooms with windows are available at a supplement. The ensuite was a wet room, which can be a cause of wet socks/feet if there are two of you and one of you showers & then the other wants to use the toilet/sink. This was not a problem for us but wet rooms aren't to everybody's tastes. The bed was comfortable.

The best aspect of the hotel, in my opinion, is it's location in the Jewellery Quarter. It's only a 10 minute walk to Birmingham city centre or 10 minutes to the heart of the Jewellery Quarter & its plethora of small independent jewellers & coffee shops, which are really worth a visit. There are several good restaurants within a 5 minute walk of Bloc and discounts are available for Bloc guests at some of these.

I'd stay at Bloc again but not for more than one night. It was an interesting hotel for one night and a unique experience to stay in a hotel that has been designed around a specific concept, but for a longer stay I'd be willing to sacrifice the interesting design features and opt in favour of more space in the room and a standard bathroom instead of a wet room. This is a matter of personal preference, of course.

Thank you for your detailed review. Something you may like to know for the future is that BLOC Birmingham will be adding to their room types 23 apart-hotel style rooms so if you prefer a larger room then please keep your eye out for when these are completed. Maybe you might be back for more than just one night.

I've stayed at the Nite Nite hotel in Birmingham, and didn't rate it, so I was nervous about going with Bloc Birmingham as the concept is similar. However, a friend told me it was in a fantastic location and worth a try.

I thought the hotel was excellent. I went for a premier room with a window. Obviously, as is the nature of the hotel, it was very small but I knew that - it still had everything I needed. Nice bed, nice lighting, great TV, lovely shower, excellent air conditioning (it was a heatwave).

The real USP of this hotel is the location. It's right next to St Paul's Square, which is a beautiful haven in Birmingham city centre and has fantastic bars and restaurants. When you're a business traveler like myself, you don't want to sit in your hotel room, you want to get out and enjoy what is around you. I had a great time staying at Bloc Birmingham. Fantastic location, good value, and a comfy and smart room to return to. Excellent.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review. I do hope you managed to take advantage and use some of the discounts provided in the 'Around the BLOC' guide that was in the bedroom on arrival. It gives you discounts in some of the bars and restaurants in and around St Pauls Square.
We have the air con maintained and serviced on a regular basis so as to ensure that it is working to its best potential and on days where we have been blessed with a heatwave it's nice to know that it is working well for our guests.
We look forward to welcoming you back to BLOC Birmingham in the near future. Thanks once again for your review.

The hotel was lovely and clean and a great price for the modern look of it. However, that being said....I feel as though it lacked some basic essentials....such as...a toilet scrub, glasses for drinking water or somewhere to drink water for that matter. Moreover, the lack of windows made us feel a but claustrophobic...however with their clever lighting they managed to find a way around it. The staff on entrance were also lovely and inviting, however, in their introduction I felt as though they could have told us a lot more about the time of check out and how house keeping works and if so what time and how to arrange it. Overall this is a lovely hotel and the images portrayed accurate images and the ambient lighting provided a soothing and relaxing atmosphere for me and my boyfriend. The only reason why I scored the hotel average is because of the essentials I thought the rooms ought to have it lacked

Thank you for your review. I will pass on your kind comments to the employees. I would like to know who checked you in as the receptionists normally mention on check-in the check-out time? The check out time is also mentioned on your key card slip and also on the information provided in the bedroom.
Midweek, housekeeping starts at 9am to clean rooms and at weekends they start at 10am. Should you have your Do Not Disturb sign on the door, they will not enter to clean the room. On the opposite side of the sign it says 'Make up my room'. You should not have to organise for housekeeping to clean your room as they should come and clean it unless the guest has told them that it is not needed.
In the wetroom next to the toiletries, there should have been 2 cups in plastic wrappers provided. Bottled water can be bought from the vending machine in the lobby or the tap water is indeed fine to drink from within the wetrooms. The reason as to why a toilet brush is not provided in the room is that some guests find it unhygienic and as the rooms are serviced daily, then it is not needed. Once again, thank you for your review.

Bloc are offering excellent value for money. The location of the hotel is great for exploring both the Jewellery Quarter and City Centre and my room was comfy enough. It was windowless and only big enough for the bed and a tiny wet room bathroom but this is exactly as described in their adverts and suited my needs perfectly. I quite like the ultra modern, minimalist design of the lobby and corridors, too. I do think the place lacks an atmosphere but for the price this is wholly fair. If motivated by price, stay here above all other options! If you're looking for an all-in city break in Birmingham though I suspect there are alternatives which might offer a more comprehensive guest experience.

Location
Central, in the attractive Jewellery Quarter, 10 minutes fast walk from New Street and Snow Hill stations. Taxi recommended from stations if travelling with large amount of luggage or very late or early, part of the access routes are quite isolated and include steps.

Accessibility
Level access to Reception. Ground floor rooms available but via small number of steps. Lift to all floors.

Staff
Very friendly and helpful

Rooms
Rooms are small - sizes are clearly indicated in the hotel website. For a one or two night stay by a small person, or couple with little luggage they are fine. A larger person or anyone with significant luggage would struggle.
Windows: the cheapest rooms do not have windows. Anyone suffering even slightly from claustrophobia is recommended to avoid. Even at night they feel quite disconcerting. The more expensive rooms with windows are worth the extra and from the 3rd floor there are some great rooftop views.
Standard of furnishing is high, with particularly good showers & enormous towels. Fixtures and fittings are in keeping with size of the room, thus pegs rather than a wardrobe, a simple tiny desk/stool combination, no kettle.

Noise
Street outside very quiet, no traffic noise. No noise noticed from within hotel but I may just have been lucky. Other reviewers have commented on thin internal walls.

In summary, the Bloc rooms are smart changing rooms ideal for those making a brief stop over/spending minimal time in their room. They fulfil this purpose well. They are not intended/suitable for anyone making a longer stay, looking to spend a certain amount of time relaxing in their room or looking for a hotel that is a destination in its' own right

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Bloc hotel is located in Birminghams Jewellery Quarter. The village atmosphere created by its cafes-bars and restaurants is complemented by the business-shopping-arts and sports facilities that are also on its doorstep. We have taken loose inspiration from Japanese pod style hotels which means much larger rooms more akin to a cabin on a luxury yacht with finishes and fittings to match. The rooms are equipped with a King Size Double Bed-luxurious linen-climate control-wet room with monsoon drench shower-Samsung 32inch led flat screen TV and high speed WIFI. Birmingham is of course a centrally located travel hub and for many of our visitors that will be the most important factor in just how quickly and conveniently they can access the motorway network-national rail and international flights. ... more   less
