“Near perfect Birmingham hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 January 2012

New hotel with room design that would be fitting for a room twice the price. Lovely bed and furnishings. Great TV and bathroom. Easy to find. Great car park. Friendly staff. Breakfast a bonus for such a hotel, and not bad - scrambled eggs/beans/sausages average, croissants/pastries suprsingly good!. Free wi-fi superb, and about time such budget hotels stopped charging for it. They won;t listen to your room preferences - we wanted a high floor on non-road side and they gave us room on first floor on road side.. Also, we asked for a cot not sofa bed and got a ... sofa bed. But they are very helpful, and sorted these personal specific issues out asap. The cot does not come with bedding - be warned. Overall, superb value - the highlight being how good the room looked and felt - very upclass! Great value in a city with few good cheap hotels.

Room Tip: they dont listen to your requests and allocate you randomly

Thank you for your positive feedback. We apologise that your room requests weren't met before check-in but, as that was a busy evening, we had very limited flexibility when assigning rooms. As you say, we respond quickly to requests when made at check-in. It is possible for us to supply sheets for the baby cots on request. We look forward to seeing you again in the future!

This is a brand new hotel and the total experience was very good all round.

There is plenty of parking (charge is £5), the room was spotless, a huge shower and a great self-service breakfast. No hesitations in recommending it.

I stayed here in December to be close to my mom in the hospital up the road. The rooms are great and the staff are efficient and helpful. My only complaint is the truly dreadful food - do not have an evening meal here, it is inedible - I was actually ill after eating the "burger" - one of the worst meals I have ever eaten

Dear Craig P,
We are sorry to hear that the Aberdeen Angus Burger wasn’t to your satisfaction, and that it caused you discomfort during your stay. We will look into what may have caused this to ensure that it doesn’t happen again. We would recommend you try some of the other meals we have available, as the burger is only one of a wide variety. We look forward to welcoming you back at the hotel in the future.

Have stayed at this new hotel several tmes, including day-let arrangements.
The hotel is new ,very modern, thus very fresh and clean.Free wi-fi is a bonus so please take note Crown Plaza's and Hiltons.
Bathroom and shower are excellent.
Big plus --excellent staff including the management who respond to requests at great speed.
Football fans looking for over night stays for games at St Andrews the hotel is great value and a short taxi ride away ,or cheaper bus service across the road.

We appreciate your positive feedback. As you say, our hotel is perfect for people attending matches at nearby St Andrews stadium; we have Sky Sports HD available in the bar for people wanting to watch a match or track the latest scores.

We were very disappointed with our stay.

I will begin my review with the positives of the hotel:
- Clean bedding and towels daily
- Shower was good with good water pressure
- Liquid hand soap dispenser in the bathroom and in the shower
- Hair-dryer is supplied
- Free continental breakfast

Now for the negatives:
- It was 10-15mins out of Birmingham City centre, not what was described when I booked, we had to get a bus which was expensive to and from the city.
- Our key-card had to be replaced 5 times as it kept failing to let us enter the hotel or our room.
- The 'restaurant' (if you can call it that) was over-priced.
- The food was packet food. The type of food that you squeeze out of a tube or get from the freezer section at the supermarket. No fresh food was served at all except for at breakfast where our banana's were bruised.
- As the food was packet/frozen food it astounds me at the wait to receive our food. We ordered garlic bread and it took 45mins to come out to the table. There was no other people ordering food at the time, we were the only ones in the restaurant area so the kitchen could not have been busy. We also received no apology as to the long wait. The meals were also brought out at different times even though it was evident my partner and I were eating together.
- The food wasn't fresh and therefore tasted rather bland and boring. The bread on the Angus burger was stale, there was no sauce, there was only 1 slice of tomato and there was very little lettuce. The meat in the Angus burger wasn't Angus beef at all, either that or a very low-grade Angus. My partner is a chef and there-fore knows his meats. The chips served with the Angus burger were cold.
- The menu descriptions did not match the meals that were served.
- The menu did not have any gluten-free options and was limited.
- We ordered our meal through a staff member who got our order wrong. We corrected him and restated our order. None-the-less our food came out wrong and we were forced to pay for a meal we did not order. We also had to go get our own cutlery because the staff member forgot our cutlery, he also forgot to bring our condiments.
- Later on that evening we came down stairs to order more food. The food took a long time and it also came out cold. We had a 20min wait to get the food heated.
- Our plates and glasses were still on the table that we had eaten at a few hours earlier. Most of the tables had not been wiped and were unclean.
- You needed the key-card to gain power in the room and also back into the building. Therefore if someone left with the key-card you would be left in the dark as I was on a couple of occasions. We were also refused a second card.
- We were informed that the hotel had full-cable services in all rooms. We only had free-to-air tv in our room.
- The Wifi made you log in every time you wanted to use the internet. I was using my Iphone to access the Wifi and every time I locked my phone or put my phone down it would make me re-enter all of my room details in order to use the internet. The Wifi was also unavailable in the dining area.
- We were charged £20 for late check out which we were not informed of, the website where I booked did not have the check in or check out times.

I would not advise anyone to stay here unless they had no options. If you are a travelling businessman this place would be suitable provided that you were not at the hotel often and are merely staying there for a warm bed.

I'm honestly shocked that people enjoyed their stay here and found it better than other hotels. They obviously were not having the same dismal experience as we were.
We will not be returning to the Holiday Inn Express in Birmingham and I highly doubt that we will return to any Holiday Inn regardless of it's location around the world.

Dear Nat P,

I’m really saddened & disappointed that you did not enjoy your recent stay at the Holiday Inn Express Birmingham-South. As you can see from our other reviews, this is not the level of service we strive to offer our guests. I would like to further discuss your recent stay as your feedback is important to us. I stayed here recently for a stop over. The location is ok, takes you onto the motorway quite quickly; the car park is safe and secure but the gap between the height of the concrete is quite low so anyone over 6ft 2 will need to duck when walking down from the car park.

The hotel is new and you can tell by the cleanliness of the place. The rooms are immaculate and the shower and toilet is very good.

I would stay here again in the future

We stayed here in November following a day at the nec good food show. The hotel was clean, modern and spacious. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was included and was more than ample. Would stay here again for sure.
