I had read a lot about Gas Street Basin in story books and others based around Birmingham. I believed it was one of the poorest areas of the city. When we were visiting we had the option of a guide to take us around, today the area has been done up is not far from the N.I.A, if anything it is now an area of outstanding beauty especially for Canal Boaters, the lighting has been kept to the old fashion theme, to be able to have read about its past and visualised what it was, seeing parts of the old system and workings preserved is amazing. The canal area is easily accessable to all and is a lovely peaceful stroll.
