From the time you walk onto the platform the sight of the train and smell of diesel takes you a step back back in time. All the staff were polite and told you of anything that maybe of interest along the route the train went. The journey was relaxing, scenic and peaceful. Will be coming on the journey again. Only problem is that Stratford-Upon-Avon station itself has no lift facilities or a ramp for people with sticks, wheelchairs or parents with young children in pushchairs.

What an overwhelming site to walk into Snow Hill Station in Birmingham to see this beautiful steam train waiting to take us on a magical ride, but alas there was no trip to Hogwarts today :-)

We chose premier class with dining and was not disappointed. As soon as we sat down breakfast was served. First course was croissants and toast which was served cold with butter and jam, quickly followed by a choice of cereals. We chose hot porridge with whisky raisins which was delicious. If that was not enough it was finished off with a full English breakfast served piping hot. A choice of tea, coffee and juice were also served with breakfast.

The journey to Stratford Upon Avon was really enjoyable through beautiful countryside with lots of people at every station and on every bridge waiting to see the steam train go by. The carriages on the train were a little worn as expected but never the less they were clean and comfortable.

On the return journey we were greeted with a hot lunch and strawberries and cream to follow. Given the fact the food was prepared and served on a moving steam train it was of a good standard and the staff were very professional and polite. Tea, coffee and juice were once again served.

Alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages including various beers and wines were served by the glass or bottle at a reasonable price.

To sum it up we had a fantastic day out at Stratford Upon Avon but the steam train journey is what made it magical for us.

This is an excellent trip on a Steam Train from Birmingham (Snow Hill) to Stratford upon Avon .Run by a great team of knowledgeable enthusiasts the engine and carriages were in excellent condition , authentic to their age .The engine was built in 1929 and some of the carriages were post war and very evocative of times gone by ......especially the smell of the smoke ! Good buffet on board with various dining options. A treat for all ages .

Booked this trip to experience traveling on a real steam train after a family visit to Thomasland theme park, though think we were more excited and impressed than our 3 year old. We booked the Shakespeare Express through the very helpful staff at Vintage Trains (www.vintagetrains.co.uk) and took the morning train to Stratford Upon Avon, spent the day there and returned on the afternoon train. It's an hour long journey through nice countryside but the real buzz is seeing the immaculately restored engine on the station platform and hearing and smelling the steam train in action, just amazing. We traveled in standard class and had steward welcome us on board and provide information about the train and journey. A great experience which I'd recommend to any train enthusiasts or simply as a lovely way to spend a day out.

Lovely day trip to Stratford, took about an hour. Disappointed that in order to go 1st class you have to have a meal. My friend and i decided to share breakfast between us. It was a good sized 3 course brekkie. Porridge or cereal to start with. I choose porridge - they had soaked the raisins in whiskey yummy! Vegetarian breakfast consisting of tomato, 2 veggie sausages, 2 eggs, hash browns. For the meat eaters out there you also get black pudding. Then toast and croissant. Plenty of tea or coffee and they came round with toast twice. Don't be expecting the orient express, this is more premier class from the 1970's. The bathroom could do with a through clean and refurbishment. its nice to see many original features and once out of Birmingham lots of lovely countryside to view. I'd recommend this as a lovely way to travel if you fancy a bit of nostalgia.
