The Jurys Inn in Birmingham has undergone a face lift and when entering it looks modern and high quality hotel. Checkin was easy and staff were friendly, everywhere was clean and tidy. The bedroom was big and again had a lovely new modern feel. The bed was very comfortable and like so many gave a choice pillows. I was glad to see I had control of the heating as many hotels during winter disable this.
So why have I given the hotel 3 stars.... considering the price there were a number of issues that showed cost cutting. Firstly the rooms are not sound proof. I know many hotels suffer from this but you could easily hear next door and had the lovely sound of upstairs going to the toilet. Toiletries were bolted to the wall - nothing like using someone else's shower gel. The toilet roll did not fit the holder. Towels were quite hard and seemed well ued. Also WIFI was expensive - I did not use it but again seems a trend for all hotels to charge for WIFI.
Finally breakfast took self service to a new level - you had to collect your own cup, knife and fork.... While the buffet breakfast was fine (nothing special) and could have done with an area to ask for freshly cooked eggs (especially poached) I was amazed that no places were set. You had to do everything yourself. I did wonder if they wanted you to clear your plates as well.
All of this considering the price made it feel like a budget hotel but trying to compete with normal hotels. Would I stay again - I would not stay here for a family holiday but it was fine for a night on business and just hope you don't have noisy neighbours!
