“Very friendly and helpful staff”
Reviewed 18 November 2012

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We eat in the restaurant and were very pleased with the standard and quality of food, Leffe on tap which is great. Room was fine but the bed wasn't the best. Overall, very good value for money though, stayed on a groupon deal which was very cheap.

Paid £45 for a twin room, so can't complain that much for the price.Upon check in the front of house was fairly abrupt.

Arrived at 1.30pm and was told check in was 2pm, and that was it, no flexibility. Went to the bar (pricey) and waited over 10 minutes for a bar man to appear, had to drag one from the kitchen eventually.

Saw a build up of people so got at the front of the queue to check in and it went smoothly enough (even though language barriers were a challenge - most staff are not Briitsh).

When we had dropped our bags off before heading out we did hear a lot of complaints from guests trying to check in but being told that their rooms were not ready, seems a lack of cleaning staff as well as bar staff.

All in all can't complain too much as it was so cheap, and around £8 in a taxi to the city centre and about a twenty minute walk back from Villa Park.

Room Tip: Walls very thin, so not sure where the good rooms were.. top tip is get to the front of the queue...

We stayed at the hotel using a Groupon Voucher so OK, the price was low and so it should have been. It cost £8 in a taxi to get there and we decided to walk into town along the canal because there was no other way other than phoning for a taxi. The walk was pleasant enough but there were areas of the towpath that were potentialy very iffy with the detrious of winos and dossers on each bench and some spooky tunnels. I would not recommend a woman to do that walk alone, especialy late on.
Birmingham itself we found to be a multicultural city in the worst sense, not to mention badly designed architecturaly and road wise.
Now the hotel, We arrived early at 12noon and were told that booking in time was 2pm, not booking in time is 2pm but I will check to see if the room is ready. Hence the immediate walk back into the city which on returning to book in we did not intend to replicate - did I say it was a half hour walk along the canal and that is being conservative?
When we returned we found a long queue waiting to check in so went into the bar to join the 5 extremely noisy Eastern Europeans, apart from that the bar area had the ambience if a railway station and the restaurant adjoining it would better be called a staff canteen. After ten minutes we were joined by a barman who served quite overpriced beer.
The public areas were tired but the room was basic and clean
Being in the middle of nowhere we went to the room and watched TV until dinner time, the waitress was fine and explained just how little we could have with a Groupon voucher. My wife settled for sausages and I elected to pay £3+ extra for a steak. The sausages arrived and consisted of a small pile of red cabbage with three sausages on top, that should have cost over £9? Fortunately my steak arrived and apart from the fat was quite well cooked and included just a few chips so my wife was able to take half of them. This steak should have cost £19 which was just plain silly. There endeth the meal.
Sleep quality was acceptable if being woken every hour by thin walls and noisy residents coming back.
Breakfast was good and plentiful.
When asked by the very pleasant Asian lady if we had enjoyed the stay I pointed out the un-acceptable dinner, she agreed not to charge me the £3+ for the steak. We then walked back along the canal with our case to the station so the 45 minute walk got us fitter at least.

Room Tip: All about the same I would think.

Being the Groupon Queen that I am, we grabbed a Groupon to stay here at a bargain price which included breakfast & dinner.
The room was very basic. All the photos about the Campanile could have easily been our room! Stained lampshades, strange wardrobe with no door, food stained menu.
To start with the positives: the staff are extremely friendly & professional, it's great to have onsite free car parking & the location isnt too bad right on the canal (20 min walk to city centre). The public areas were very clean & inviting. A nice spacey restaurant & bar area with several TV's. the food was very nice but slightly pricey for what you get. The buffet breakfast was very good however as you can have as much as you want.
In the room itself the lighting isn't very good for putting your make up on & there are hardly any plug sockets. Also no where to hang your towels once you've showered/bathed. Talking of which the shower was a bit fierce taking the term power shower to the extreme!! I had to check that I still had nipples when I got out!!! Other than that, cheap 'n' cheerful.

This was a Groupon deal for one night with dinner and breakfast. And very good value for money. We were greeted warmly by the staff at reception. Our twin room overlooked the canal as requested. I was small but very clean with comfortable beds. The room heater was very efficient. There was plenty of hanging and shelf space but it lacked a bedside table which we missed, both wearing specs and having a book with us. We had tea making facilities and a TV. I think you are a fair way from the town centre but bus services are good and you could walk Down the canal into town which is pleasant. Our evening meal was ok. Pub type food but freshly cooked.
The biggest downside of the whole stay was the smell of cooking fat that permeated throughout all the public areas. This would be the one thing that would stop me staying again.

If you are on a tight budget this hotel is acceptable. I personally would prefer not to stay again but it's hard to criticise anywhere that offers accommodation this cheaply.

The room was freezing. There was an electric heater on the wall but even when turned up full it didn't warm the room. I guess one small heater in a very large room just isn't enough. There was a push switch on the wall that said it was for a bathroom heater but it didn't appear to do anything, so the bathroom was icy too. I ended up sleeping in jeans and a jumper as well as using the extra blanket supplied.

I was in a room right at the end of the corridor. Perhaps those nearer the centre of the hotel are warmer.

The wifi signal was also incredibly weak, but again I think that's down to the room I was in.

Other than that the room was clean and relatively comfortable.

Room Tip: My best advice would be if you have to stay here in winter bring warm clothes or a little heater and...

The description of the location of the hotel is misleading"A few minutes walk from the City attractions and New Street Station"It took us 30minutes ,cutting through the University Campus. It is a £7.00 taxi ride.
At dinner when Parmesan was requested for the Pasta we were given Cheddar when questioned
the Waitress said thats all they had but the crowning glory was that there was no coffee at breakfast as the machine was broken and no alternative was offered. We checked ou at 9.30 and headed into the City to get a coffee. This was a Groupon deal.I should hate to have paid the usual tarrif. We visit Birmingham often and wont stop here again
