“This Holiday Inn lets the whole chain down”
Reviewed 11 October 2013

I often stay at Holiday Inns in the UK and I would recommend them in general as being good places. This was my first time at the Birmingham Airport one and, alas, they let the rest of the chain down.

Good points: nice rooms, nice swimming pool, good location, friendly staff

Bad points: charged £60 more than they were meant to (and a week later I’m still fighting to get the refund, to no avail), massively understaffed so long queues for everything, including check-in (one of the staff there that I spoke to was quitting as fed up of always being alone), need to phone 20 times before anyone answers, poor quality English language skills (the glossy printed menu in the restaurant always spelt ‘bacon’ as ‘beacon’ and ‘rump’ as ‘rumb’), massively overpriced restaurant, room strongly smelt of BO, none of the promised amenities in the room were there (luxury toiletries, bathrobe, slippers, bottled water, chocolate, orange juice; not even enough cups for coffee), jacuzzi was lukewarm and didn’t bubble.

It’s a shame, it’s a good chain, but the management in this one need a right good shaking up.

I stayed at this HI and at first was disappointed that it was not walking distance to the NEC where I was working for the weekend at the A Place in the Sun Show. However the hotel lays on a regular private mini bus services to the NEC which was great and just outside there is a public bus stop that takes you into the centre of Birmingham. The bus costs 2 pounds and make sure you have the correct change!! Taxis to Solihull and Meriden are affordable.

The staff at the hotel were very friendly and attentive. I really enjoyed using the gym, pool, jacuzzi and spa which the Holiday Inn Express, which is walking distance from the NEC, does not have. The room was clean, new, comfortable and well equipped. The bed was a little lumpy in places but after a long days work it did not prevent me from sleeping. If you want to walk to the NEC stay at the HI Express. If you want the luxury of a pool, gym, jacuzzi and steam room, stay here!

Room Tip: Second floor is good and not noisy!

There is nothing flash about this hotel, but its easy to get to, has plenty of parking, the rooms are small but clean and comfortable and its just a stones throw from the airport. This last point however does mean you'll probably be able to hear the noise of aircraft 24/7. Didn't keep me awake though.

Breakfast was a basic buffet, ideal if all your looking for is to fuel up before a long journey.

Having been travelling for a good part of the day we arrived at the Holiday Inn just after midnight and looking forward to a comfortable night before heading to home the following morning. However on arrival in reception we were in a queue behind some obviously very upset customers! Thinking (perhaps a bit smugly) we wouldn’t have the problems they seemed to be encountering because our room was booked and had been for some time. How wrong can you be!!! We were told there had been a problem with their computer system and none of that day’s bookings had come forward, therefore they had let all the rooms to other customers. We pointed out that we had checked our booking with them when leaving for our holiday as we stayed with them the night before and left our car in their care while we were away. It had even been paid for in advance! We were then sent in a taxi to the Apollo Hotel in the centre of Birmingham – the name conjures up a luxurious hotel – oh no! Firstly the taxi driver couldn’t find the entrance so we realised it was not a major hotel. The reception area was quite acceptable, the staff very helpful and the following morning the breakfast was fine but that was where it ended. We were put in a room in one of the blocks which had obviously seen better days. The lift was quite scary, it stopped at every floor and when you got to the correct one the doors took ages to open. The room door had the number stated with a sticky label but there was a plaque stating “this is a non-smoking room” but on entry you could smell stale smoke. The carpets were dirty but the bed linen was clean as was the bathroom. We returned to the reception area to avail ourselves of the 24 hour bar (we needed a drink after all this). The receptionist was a pleasant chap who informed us this was a regular occurrence with the Holiday Inn and other major chains near the airport and whilst we were in reception he took numerous calls of other re-directions, in fact we met up with most of the customers we had seen in the Holiday Inn reception area that night. There was a fiasco the following morning with the taxi taking us back to the Holiday Inn and who was going to pay!!! When we got back to the Holiday Inn we asked to see the Manager and eventually saw a very helpful Manageress who said she didn’t know what had gone wrong (didn’t believe that) but would take the Apollo off their list. After a determined conversation we did get a full refund. To add insult to injury when we got home and waded through our emails the Holiday Inn had in fact emailed us a couple of days prior confirming our booking!

This is offsite of the airport so will require a car or taxi, is expensive and there is a large disparity between rooms. The room I was in was very basic. Personally I would not stay there again. Wifi at the bar is reasonably fast

Room Tip: The rooms above 50 seem to be alot better. Alsothe shuttle ends at 8:30pm

We booked into the Holiday Inn because they were doing a special deal on car parking which meant we could spend one night in the hotel and leave our car for eight days while on holiday elsewhere. The NCP car park is just a short walk down the road from the hotel, but appears to be largely unattended. Certainly we saw no-one there either when we parked our car or when we picked it up (unharmed) a week later, but for the price we paid it was a very good deal.

As for the hotel itself, well, it's a Holiday Inn so you know exactly what you're getting don't you? Standard, corporate, impersonal and a wee bit dated. We were greeted at the entrance by loud pop emanating from speakers hidden in the bushes. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

As others have remarked the air con is not too efficient, so we found the room uncomfortably warm.

Our wake-up call was only 5 minutes late and the free hotel shuttle bus arrived on time at 6am but why, oh why, does it only take you to the rail station and not to the airport, which is only another ten minutes further on? (The monorail system between the rail station and the airport is brilliant though.)

OK for one night but we wouldn't have wanted to stay longer.

My colleague had booked 4 of us in to stay for several nights this week whilst working at a show at the NEC. I arrived to chaos ... the booking system had apparently crashed days beforehand and there was no room for me. Despite a booking confirmation they had not contacted us to advise. The result - a total Basil Fawlty Moment where at 11pm after flying into the airport I was put in a taxi to a very calm and lovely Hyatt Hotel in the city centre. They did however, find rooms for us the next day and apart from the extortionate overpriced meals the executive rooms are lovely. Don't expect a lay in ...get up and use the lovely swimming pool as a 747 will be your alarm call roaring down the runway ...just half a mile away...at 5am. Tip get a taxi around a fiver to selection of recommended Balti houses for dinner. Oh and as other reviews there is no shuttle from the airport so you arrive expecting an airport hotel within sight ...to find it is a good 5 minute taxi ride away. Best avoided to be sure of a bed for the night !!

Room Tip: Go for executive ...or complain as I did and get an upgrade !
