“Bizarre”
Reviewed 3 November 2009

We got a cheap booking for overnight stay plus parking for our holiday. Thought I'd got a bargain until we turned up to the room and found no heating on. When I called down to ask how to turn it on they said they hadn't heating for quite some time. It was so bizarre and typical of our airport hotel experience we just ended up laughing. How can they let you turn up in winter without informing you you'd be staying somewhere with no heating through the whole place? They did bring us a heater very promptly - it was about the size of a hand towel.

We had to use some bizarre lift up to a floor, go round loads of windy corridors to even find the room and coming back down again took about 15 minutes and caused a minor tiff as we quarelled over which way we should turn next.

Having said all that we had a nice expensive snack in the bar with drinks double normal pub prices and then slept surprisingly well. Transfer to the airport is £2 and a few minutes away and they picked us up very promptly when we landed. Birmingham is a nice airport and after travelling to Gatwick and staying in some VERY rough hotels, this wasn't bad for the money we paid. We did meet another couple who had paid a lot more and I would have been asking for a refund.

Hotel is undergoing a large scale renovation so be prepared for some inconvenience, especially if you have to park a vehicle.
Staff are very friendly, polite and helpful.
The hotel is like a rabbit warren with twists and turns including step downs (3 steps) to a different level in the same hallway. This is very awkward if carrying a heavy case although an elevator is provided.
Carpets in the room we occupied were threadbare and the heater/ac ceiling unit was not working. An electric heater was in the room with a caster missing so it sat in a lopsided way. Bathroom ventilation was poor.
The ‘Flight Bar’ served a tasty meal although expensive. We decided to have breakfast at the nearby airport because of the high cost at the hotel.
All in all we have had better accommodations at different Holidays Inns for less.

I stayed in this hotel some 12-18 months ago and then it was being refurbished with a lot of dust & noise all over the place - a disaster, certainly if you take into account the very high rate they applied (but it was during a fair). I tried to discuss it with the duty manager, but she was never available - called a few times afterwards but never available again and of course, my comment card remained unanswered. As everyone deserves a second chance, I made a new reservation now, but before doing that, I called the hotel to check how far they were on their renovation and if it would still cause inconveniences. The answer from the receptionist was that "it's at it's end now, and you'll hardly notice it". How big a surprise when I saw the reality: the whole building is surrounded by scaffolding, they have emergency / temporary stairs to reach the rooms and you'd better leave breadcrumbs from reception to your room as in the fairy tale, otherwhise you'll never find the reception back. So, however nice their future project looks like, they've now broken my trust twice (once by not being interested in my opinion during the first visit and now by being unfair about the real state of the hotel). As for the price, they still apply "normal" prices, as if nothing were going on: I checked for the next day and there are rooms in this hotel for 89 £, while the rooms at Hilton Metropole (with a continuous shuttle bus) are only at 79 £. I admit that some of the Hilton rooms are a bit "tired", but their breakfast is manifold better and their leisure club is really top !

We arrived at the hotel to nab the last parking space available so it would suggest a lack of parking available at the hotel.
The check-in was all fine but the way to the room resembled something of a maze as we had to go up, across and down twice as far which is a shade confusing.

The room was standard fare for a Holiday Inn although the towels should be checked more thoroughly before being put out for guest use!
The room was comfortable and quiet.

The transfer to the airport is quick and efficient and the 5am driver was very friendly. The return leg is more complicated though. Told to go around to the train station, we did but its not clear where you have to wait as there are several bus stops to wait at. In the end we just decided to get a taxi back to the hotel.
The car was in the NCP next door, in fine condition!!......however, leave the car as you find it, I dont leave it in gear and I dont need it jumping forward when I start it because it has been left in gear!!

All in all.....its main principal is to make early morning flights easy and thats just what the Holiday Inn does.

I'm nornally quite a fan of Holiday Inns (Priority Club playinum member and all that) but would recommend giving this one a miss, at least for now.

First of all the parking is diabolical due to the fact it's undergoing at extrensive refurbishment - but what I didn't appreciate was being ticked off by the hotel shuttle bus driver for having the cheek to park in a space that he wanted to ujse and then being told to use the public car park next door

Chck in was good - the male receptionist was pleasant and was concerned when I told him about the car park incident.

When I checked in, I found I'd been given a smoking room (which REALLY stank) when I had requested a non smoking room. and had it confirmed on my booking. Phoned reception, and was told by a rather ratty female recptionist that there were none available. On requesting that I be moved to one of the other nearby Holiday Inns, this immediately changed into "Oh yes, we have one available now!!".

Both rooms and the hotel decor overall were tired. This hotel may turn out to be very nice after refurb is complete, but for now it is a very poor example of the Holiday Inn brand, and would recommend avoiding

Hotel is currently in the middle of major refurishment and could be described as 'like a building site'. On-site car parking very limited.

Staff a very friendly but restaurant food only very average. It is seriously in need of the refurbishment, but they have lowered proces whilst the work goes on.

Great for Birmingham Airport as it is literally next door.

stayed ay holiday inn birmingham airport over night hotel was fine but think again for airport parking. When we booked 15 days car parking we were advised it could be on or off site parking but al with cctv. On our return we picked our car up from solihull moors football club car park no cctv and beaware!! CAR BOOTS are held on this car park every sunday, the hotel had never informed us of this and my car had been damaged by another car, after informing the hotel they refused to take any ownership for this but the parking they are selling is very misleading.
