I went here with a group of golfers for three nights and upon arrival everything seemed fine rooms was a twin double which was OK by 4 star standards but nothing great.
Going then straight out to golf and played the Aylesford course which was fine but had a lot of road noise from the adjacent motorways although its a good course for all handicaps as there are some testing holes (once you know where you are going).
The bar area was in keeping with the hotel but the service was slack and trying to get a drink was difficult and if you sat outside trying to get waiter service it was poor so you end up getting the drinks yourself.
The evening food was very poor and although a large group (28) I felt like we were an inconvienience and they tried to get us fed and out as soon as possible. The quality of the food for the price of the stay was diabolical and comments were made to the duty manager who's response was a free bottle of wine - I don't drink wine so not really an option. There was however a promise of better food to come the following night, with a Chinease Extravaganza well waht a dissappointment that was, smoked salmon and prawn salad (buffet) with potato salad etc. When I asked if this was the Chinaese I was informed that it was main course only.
What was set out was a complete insult to Chinease cuisene soft tasteless noodles, sweet and sour pork that contained the breakfast left over bacon, soggy fried fish on a bed of stewed peppers, New Potatoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and rice that you could pebbledash a wall with.
Needless to say it was inedible and a very large number of complaints were made to the duty manager and when asked if there was an alternative they tried to charge for it - speechless.
The food the following night was a bit better but again we seemed to be an inconvienience.
I have stayed at Marriott hotel all over the world and never have I had food and service like this - the cost of staying there is high and you then expect the service and food quality to be eaqually high.
Breakfast was Ok and what you would expect but if you are playing golf early and at breakfast at 7am you would expect the chef to be there to cook omlettes etc fresh as thia is part of the service. I asked when the freshly cooked option would be available I was told not until 8am - very odd.
The golf on the Arden course is excellent and the green staff are to be congratulated on the high quality maintainence of it. It is not a course for high handicappers as many of the holes have long carries to the fairways and lost balls would be a common problem. The greens are fantastic and need a good look at to try and convert the putt. It has the ability to made agood short game player look very silly.
Overall I thought the golf was great but I would never stay at the hotel again, look for another close by and play the Arden
