Where can I start with this review? Firstly it took us half an hour driving round Birmingham and two sat navs and we still couldn't find the hotel. A taxi driver we used later summed it up by saying 'if you don't know Birmingham city centre very well, its a real mission to find this hotel by road'...how true....We eventually arrived, and parked at the adjacent Mailbox car park (which if you don't know is £19 for 24 hours). On entering the hotel the first things that we noticed were the Starbucks franchise to the left and the incredible noise coming from the Mezzanine just at the top of the stairs to the right (although I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say this could have been Christmas revellers....) and also how dark the reception area was. We checked in and then tried to find our 6th floor room, as previous reviewers have said this isn't easy as room numbers are very small on the dark doors, if you're short sighted forget it!!! I noticed trays of food from room service on the floor outside adjacent rooms which were still there when we left some time later.....not good. Our room at first seemed quite pleasant, and certainly cosy with the (numerous) lamps lit, I realised later it was because the one very small window is totally inadequate to let in any natural light and also it doesn't open. Also the storage space seems odd, no bedside drawers, some shelving at the side of the fridge, 2 drawers next to it, or shelves in the wardrobe.....hmm.....also we had a lot of missing coathangers, the wire clips were on the rail but there were only four coathangers for two of us for a two night stay, although when I asked housekeeping they did come with two more......With the room though you have two choices, either you swelter as the room gets very hot, or you put on the air con to cool it down and then get very cold.....Some of the furniture was looking a little tired, black in a hotel room which gets a lot of use seems an odd choice as it chips at the edges....also the carpet was a little stained and there was a stain on the throw on the bed....That said the room was not a bad size and the bathroom was ok, it was just SO dark....to apply make up I had to sit on the bed and look upwards to the ceiling spotlights......We had a two night stay here, and by the time we left quite honestly I was desperate for daylight and fresh air....The staff were very pleasant though, although they didn't tell us until we enquired that we could get 15% off the carparking charges. We didn't have breakfast £13.95 for a continental is crazy!!! We had been emailed by the hotel prior to our arrival to say we could request an upgrade and that we would be told on arrival if it were available, no one mentioned it on check in at all, so it was either not available or forgotten about, who knows???? All in all, unless this hotel is on a real 'deal' I wouldn't consider it again, and even if it was really cheap Id think twice, I like some light and fresh air and there was no chance of either at Malmaison, sorry management, but some people find it very important!!!
