Stayed here for 1 night, after being told the week before by phone they do not take a deposit upon checking in they immediately asked for my bank card and took £50 as a deposit even though I advised we would not be having any extras or anything from the mini bar! I was then told the £50 would he refunded when we checked out the next day! The room itself is average nothing special and the air conditioning was crap! The Window did not open and the view was of a construction site as they are doing up the mail box, overall would not stay here again highly recommend the Radisson blue they go out of there way and nothing is to much trouble a lot cheaper to stay at and much more modern and lots of extras.

I stayed in June 2014 at the Malmaison Birmingham on a business trip with everything paid by my employer. The location is really good being close to New Street Station and the city centre. The room was nice and the shower excellent.

This hotel tries to be stylish but there are things that really let it down:

* breakfast: why not do a hot buffet breakfast? everyone else does and it's much better than ordering. Nice sausages but the coffee was so weak as to barely qualify as coffee.

* music: in the restaurant in the evenings it's much too loud, some sort of house music I think which was rather unpleasant.

* discretionary service charge: this got me really angry. Every meal ordered in the restaurant or from room service comes with an automatically added 10% discretionary service charge. This is a nasty little habit brought over from the USA which the hotel cannot force you to pay. We do not do this in the UK so DON'T PAY IT. Take it off your bill and adjust the total. What makes it worse is that the hotel then has the cheek to also add a line on the bill for a gratuity. I am happy to pay a tip in cash which I hope the staff get to keep but there is no way on earth I am going to pay a discretionary service charge....ever. Service should come as standard, not as an automatically-added extra which the hotel presumably hope we will overlook and then pay a gratuity on top. It's outrageous. If the hotel wants to boost its profits (which this charge is designed to do) then it should increase its food charges by 10% instead of using this appalling tactic.

The room was nice but because of the the poor breakfast, the rather loud music in place of any sort of atmosphere, and particularly the discretionary service charge I will not want to stay here again.

I recommended this place for my friends to stay. Location was perfect right in the centre and great for the night I had planned. Above all I love the bar and cocktails. Room was spacious and staff at reception very friendly. But the breakfast service was the worst experience ever, skip it and go across to the mail box to Cafe Rouge

Stayed here Friday to Saturday as part of girlfriend's 30th. We had a great stay. Stayed in room 709 in a superior room. Not a great view but the room itself was large and had all the facilities with a luxury touch. Nice touch too as I had asked for chocolate strawberries in the room prior to arrival as it was a birthday celebration. I received no email reply but at check-in it was clear that reason for stay had been noted as my girlfriend was wished a happy birthday and we were given two vouchers for free cocktails. In the room they set up a slate board wishing her a happy birthday with a selection of chocolates and chocolate strawberries. I had also prebooked a spa visit and we were given 20% off that. All in all a great stay in a modern hotel in a great location. Wharfside restaurants/bars a few minutes away are varied and aplenty.

I booked the hotel for a Sunday night for my boyfriend's birthday. I booked the one room suite as the website seemed to show that the room, although not massive, looked very modern, cool and something a bit more special than the others.

The hotel reception area is lovely and modern, however, the room was a huge disappointment. The marketing of Mal Maison is that they're contemporary, quirky, boutique hotels that are a little bit luxurious, but not inaccessible. The reality couldn't have been more different.

The one bedroom suite was a very good size, however, there was nothing special about it. The decor was slightly outdated, grubby and lots of it needed replacing/repairing. Personally, I always look forward to the hotel bathrooms as they're a chance to have a bath in a big tub, but the bathroom was your bog standard - small bath (not roll top as depicted in website images), with a very small shower.

Lots of bits of furniture looked tatty and well-used and the bathroom and dressing room were well worn in places and in need of fixing up. Unlike the website, there was no style to the room - it was very basic. The only thing differentiating it from a room at the Premier Inn was the size.

All-in-all, considering how the rooms look on the website and that I specifically chose a one bedroom suite as a treat, it was a real disappointment and I wouldn't bother booking again.

Room Tip: Either pay more for the very best rooms, or don't bother staying here if you're looking for...

Stayed over for two nights due to convention nearby. Very well placed for the convention centre and a few mins from New Street station. Hotel overall good, staff seem attentative. Breakfast slightly confusing, our room included continental not full, either of which you had to order anyway ?

Good cocktail bar and comfortable room with A/C that actually worked !

I stayed here on business so don't know what the room cost I'm afraid.

However I did find the food and drinks noticeably expensive. Burger and chips £16 and some steaks nearing £40 - with veg and sauces to add on. Plus a service charge.

Somewhat strangely they don't sell pints of beer - just schooners, which is two thirds of a pint. At £4 a go that's the equivalent of £6 a pint for a Heineken!

The place is a 5 min walk from New St station, check in was efficient and room nicely appointed with a good range of toiletries.

Breakfast fine, but I didn't go for the cooked options - which were 'cooked to order' rather than being kept warm (or not!) under lamps like at some other establishments.
