“Great service great location”
Reviewed 25 November 2012

The staff were lovely and helpful. I left my computer cable and they sent it to me free of charge, location super next to shopping areas and very central. Love the illy coffee.
Rooms were clean and modern quiet beds very comfortable.

Stayed here for one Saturday night and have to say it was a very pleasant experience from start to finish. Was a little worried about the negative reviews concerning all the mod cons, which in my opinion turned out to be totally unfounded. On arrival at the hotel the staff in the reception area were very welcoming and approachable. The 'self service' Check-in was so easy I do not understand how anyone can fault it and we found there were sufficient staff available to assist with any issues that might have arisen. In fact this works in their favour as the staff are more available to answer the more individual questions guests may have about directions or other local advice, instead of being tied up constantly with the long winded mundane task of individually checking people in.

Security in the hotel is very good as you are unable to access the accomodation areas without a room key card. Here the crisp modern public areas give way to softly lit, airy corridors that with their plush carpeting, lead you invitingly to your rooms.

The room we had overlooked the road, but this is a city hotel - what do you expect? We did not find this obtrusive at all. Nor did we find traffic noise an issue. If you listened very hard you might hear it - but it was by no measure disturbing. Yes everything is at a touch of a button and as such I suppose you have to be a little au fait with such modern controls. Perhaps for the less technically minded there could be more visible written instructions - at least pointing you to the fact that most controls can be performed using the phone as the control panel. However like with most things these days just use your initiative and follow the online menu - its really not that difficult.

The room had everything we needed and expected from a hotel and the most comfortable beds for a brilliant nights sleep. The bathroom and the walk in shower was amazing with heated mirrors so they don't fog up with steam. And no, they may not provide super comfy bathrobes - but really people - is this something you really need? Instead they provide the biggest snuggliest bath sheets I have ever seen. Now that is luxury!! No having to try to dry yourself on a rough postage stamp of a towel. They do provide sufficient toiletries and if you find something lacking like a toothbrush or toothpaste - these are available from reception.

We came back to the hotel late evening after a show in the NIA and sat in the bar until about 1am. There was a lovely ambience enhanced by the modern feel of the hotel and there was even some live piano music and singing which started well after midnight. Very continental. The bar staff were very friendly and not once made it feel that we were keeping them up - an experience I have often found in other hotels. We were able to sit and chat in a relaxed manner over a couple of nightcaps until we were ready to retire.

Breakfast was also a pleasant experience despite being steadily busy with plenty of staff to ensure you had all you needed. There was an extensive buffet menu of cereals and continetal style choices including an array of cakes and pastries and plenty of fruit and sliced meats. And despite the fact there were no cheeses laid out - when I asked - it was no trouble for them bring a small plate out especially for me. And contrary to what I have read in another review, there WAS a cooked breakfast on a Sunday and of excellent standard despite also being a buffet style. Not too much food was put out in one go, so it was always very fresh. Again, not like some I have experienced where the food is left in the trays for so long it is really becomes quite inedible. Top marks for breakfast!

Overall I would most definitely stay here again should I need to come back to Birmingham. In fact it may even entice me to come back more often. I would have no problems in highly recommending this hotel to anyone who isn't a techno-dinosaur. Come and experience and enjoy!

Modern, new, high-tech, attractively furnished hotel. Booking just over a week before staying meant £120 per person per night (twin room) without breakfast - £14.00 p.p.: Pretty standard but well cooked. Staff very friendly and helpful. Free wi-fi. Technical, person-less airport type check-in/out via keyboards embedded in columns in reception worked for few people. Hotel seems to concentrate on groups and conferences. Food in restaurant no more than 6/10 - minimalist and overcooked. Charged a service charge, tip and gratuity on same bill. Member of staff explained that some diners "just pay" and others "get annoyed" - perhaps "the management will change it" (sic).
Special advance request for room on high floor was declined at reception, despite fact that hotel was not full. Owners said to be experienced but obviously need more learning!

Room Tip: Ask for a room that face the "building site" side of the hotel, facing towards Selfridges...

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We do have a vast amount of experience in the industry however we are also building a product for our customers today and not on for any past venues and with this we are very open to listening to our customers and learning about what they think will make us the number one venue in Birmingham. It was the food and beverage teams decision to add a service charge and they are in control of this money, however I agree that stating this and a tip is unacceptable and we will take steps to change this immediately. As part of our planning permission we had to implement a green energy programme which allocates all guests in the same area of the hotel when all rooms are not full. This however can be overridden should a guest prefer a room outside this system and we will ensure training takes place to help with this. As for the your experience in Aalto, 6/10 is not where we intend to be and we will be looking at this carefully with the team so that continually we are reaching better scores than this. I do hope that you will stay with us again and please make yourself known to me or one of my colleagues when you are next here and we can see if you feel that we have improved which is what we intend to do. Kind regards Jane Riley

We stayed here for one night for a treat and we were not disappointed.
One first arrival the lobby definitely has the wow factor in an otherwise dreary part of the world. The Christmas decorations are stunning!
We checked in quickly and easily using the electronic system assisted by the receptionist and were in our room within ten minutes.
The room was comfortable clean and felt a cut above many other hotels as the finishing touches were all carefully considered and of high quality.
The bed was big and comfortable and the hower Devine!
Breakfast was fresh and plentiful with great choice and the service from each staff member we encountered was excellent !
My only criticism would be the bar pries. £10.40 for a single glass of wine!!!! Honestly! There is no justification for this at all especially as there are many bars and restaurants within easy reach.
Having said that I would stay there again but would steer clear of the bar!

Book through the Hotel La Tour website for dinner, room, and breakfast and was massively impressed.

Food and service were excellent and the room was spacious and clean. The breakfast was the best we have had at a hotel. Only paid £129 all in and that includes £60 off your dinner bill.

Amazing good value, a perfect stay.

Stayed for a Saturday night and really felt welcomed by the friendly staff. We ate in the restaurent and really enjoyed the food. Best part was the excellent breakfast. Lots of choice, well presented and all fresh and warm. Also lots of helpful cheery staff which gave a pleasant atmosphere. Only minor gripe was lack of bathtub - even in the exec room (although do appreciate this is a city location). However a design fault on the walk in shower meant a very wet floor ( hope they can sort that as the rooms and decor are lovely).

All in all a great deal - good packages available as well as cheap, secure parking at Selfridges. Definitely recommended and will stay again.
