My parents kindly offered to look after our 2 daughters (5 and 2 years old) on New Year's Eve... so I thought I would treat myself and my wife to a night away from home. Found this hotel on Trip Advisor and over 70% of the reviewers had scored this hotel as "Excellent" so I thought I would go with the crowd. I wasn't disappointed. The hotel is slightly off the beaten track, so if you are not keen on a good walk (or you wear high heels, as my wife did), this may not be for you but I paid just £5 for a taxi from the hotel to the Mailbox early evening on 31st December (for a meal at Bar Estilo - see separate review). I think the hotel opened in 2012 and they have kept it immaculate, modern and clean. I paid £215 for a suite with breakfast for 2 of us, which I thought was good value on NY-Eve.
Self service check in was easy and quick. The overall feel of the hotel decor was modern but welcoming, very clean and relaxed.
The room was spacious, the TV and other facilities were good (especially the one over the bath). The drench shower was excellent and the bed was very comfy. The room didn't wow me like an older, luxury hotel would (e.g. Kings Hotel, Chipping Campden) but it was a significant upgrade from your standard chain hotel. The comfy dressing gown and simple slippers were a nice touch and the espresso machine/tea making facilities were good. I parked in the Moor Street car park, which is a few mins stroll away (if you are active) and this was only £5... which I thought was great having paid £18 when staying at Malmaison in Brum.
Considering it was NY-Eve, I slept very well and did not hear any noise that one or two other reviewers had noted. The buffet breakfast was excellent - good range of hot food (English Breakfast), pastries, cereals, breads (my wife loved the walnut bread) and other items, as well as fresh juices, tea, coffee, etc. All of the staff were friendly, helpful, attentive (not intrusive) and courteous. I had a quick look at the gym - there were 2 bikes, 2 treadmills and 2 cross trainers (all looked new), with free weight dumbbells and a multi-purpose machine, with water and towels, so perfectly adequate if you were inclined to get some exercise during your stay!
The only constructive criticism I would make - and I am scraping the barrell here - is that I recorded a program on the TV but I didn't know how to retrieve it to watch it; I called reception but they stated that they would have to send someone up and it was late so I didn't bother. Overall, I had a really good experience - it wasn't mind blowing but it was very good for a city centre and modern hotel; I would definitely go back and from £85 for a standard room upwards, I think it is good value.
