“Fantastic Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2013 via mobile

The Hotel La Tour is a very attractive boutique hotel. The large open spaces in reception and the bar/restaurant are very well designed, and furnished to a very high standard. The bedrooms are stunningly appointed, roomy and well equipped. Free WiFi was very much appreciated and inexpected as most hotels charge for this facility. The only thing that stopped me giving this venue a higher rating was the greasy, poorly cooked breakfast. The range was vast, but lacked quality. Saying the I would stay again.

Had a very nice stay with my fiancee 2nd & 3rd March good points hotel is very new so modern & clean ie minamilist bar is trendy & has comfortable seating areas restaurant is nice & the food we had was very well presented & very good portions downside was limited menu & waited far too long between starter & main @ least 45mins!!.We stayed in executive room which was very nice good size with the best shower i've ever experienced. Now for the bad bit & let it be a warning to anyone visiting the hotel!! on arrival the hotel offers a self check in service & also a checkout service we used this option which @ the time appeared to work well. However nearly 2wks after staying my fiancee has discovered that her CC has been declined when attempting to use it as Hotel La Tour have a policy of securing a large amount of money against CC until bill has been paid.Obviously as we paid the bill using the automatic checkout this should not have happened & is ridiculous that we had to find out nearly 2wks later as my fiancees card was declined!!.Considering the inconvenience this has caused the apology my fiancee received today by whoever deals with such problems was in our opinion poor as he was more concerned by how it could occur rather than focus on the predicament this has caused!! card provider have now advised this could take up to 2wks to remedy utterly ridiculous & has soured our stay.Overall lovely hotel buy beware self checkout machines!!.

Staying at this hotel is how it should be. They have thought of everything! Even the cutlery is local! Fabulous bedrooms, staff, service and food. Meeting rooms are excellent, chairs are so comfy! The whole hotel has a feeling if 'space' with wide corridors and so much natural daylight! Unheard of in a city centre hotel!

I've stayed in Hotel La Tour twice since it opened and have to say it offers something that many of the other big names doesn't. You get the feeling here that your money has been well spent.

Most importantly you can get a great night's sleep in the comfy beds, whilst having the comfort of a great shower in the morning. The only problem is that you may end up being late since the bed and shower are hard to walk away from.

The first time i stayed here (around September 2012), we ate a 3 course meal and the steak was great. Our waiter had a great knowledge of all the wines and was very helpful with advising us on those best suited to our meals. The last time I stayed here was with my partner for a night over the weekend of valentines day. Although we didn't eat here, we had drinks and the cocktails were great, with some live music in the bar which was a nice touch.

We had a view toward Selfridges, which was nice, and the full height windows really made the best of it. If you're driving, it is best to park in the Selfridges car park, which only cost £5.

I'd definitely choose to stay here again, it is much closer to the shops than many hotels in Birmingham and has all the amenities and functionality you could ask for.

We stayed here for one night only and wished we could have stayed for longer. Hotel La Tour was superb. It is relatively easy to find with an area just outside the main entrance where you can park to unload. The reception area is sparse as check in pods are available for use if required, I guess for speed. We paid for a room upgrade and were recommended the superior room. We were not disappointed. These rooms are located in the apex of the building so have a quirky shape, but it works. Spacious bedroom with large flat screen television, a clothing area with wardrobe, iron and ironing board, large bathroom with a lovely deep bath, very spacious walk in shower and a television and a study area with a desk. I loved the futuristic finishing touches with swipe card entry to the room and touch pads to control room lighting and temperature.
We indulged in the afternoon tea, which wasn't the best that we had ever had but was more than adequate.
The one down side of Hotel La Tour is lack of parking, but this is what can be expected from most city centre hotels. Parking is available relatively close by at the discounted rate of £5 per 24 hours so superb value for money for the city centre.
We loved Hotel La Tour and would recommend and definitely stay here again.

The pluses:
+ new hotel with great interior design
+ 10 mins walk to Bullring

The minuses
- Indifferent customer service
- Hit and miss food - and expensive
- A triumph of style over function

I stayed twice, for a week with work on my second trip. The hotel looks beautifully designed but after a while, a series of minor deficiencies and annoyances begin to wear. Non are major but they add up to a hotel that needs to pull its socks up a bit.

The hotel is a bit like the City Inn/Mint/Doubletree in Manchester - but without the customer service or reliability of decent restaurant food.

The TV in the room has some over-elaborate system, but basic Freeview channels like Sky News are missing and all rooms get BBC1 for East Anglia - this wasn't fixed in two weeks.

There is a gap where the missing mini bar would go in each room. You don't even get a pen and paper in the rooms. Or a glass for the bathroom. Even the complimentary little bottle of water doesn't get replenished over whole week. Used room service plates get left in the corridors all night. It's a bit mean for rooms costing over £100+/night.

The main disappointment is over the restaurant and general customer service. The receptionists were mostly nice but managed to get taxi bookings wrong a few times, didn't seem very confident with guests or remembered to follow-up on items.

The restaurant meet and greet staff/managers seem to be in the wrong job. They barely acknowledge guests as others have commented. At breakfast they are not on top of basic replenishment of essentials like plates and glasses. The food was hit and miss at breakfast and dinner - sometimes very good, sometimes very overcooked and greasy. The ratio was 50/50 over a week. And it's definitely not cheap. There's also a £5 charge from bringing room service up in the lift. The cafe is permanently shut due to lack of custom - so there's only the expensive full restaurant or a few bar snacks. There is nothing within a 5 min walk as an alternative.

Overall, the building is great but they need to work on staff training and better recruitment of restaurant managers, fix basics like the TV and stop penny pinching in the rooms with things like pens, water and glasses.

Room Tip: The upgrade to the executive rooms is not really worth it - even at just £10 - almost no difference.

Spent two nights at this hotel. Room was on the small size and the window looked out at some flats opposite. But there was a decent sized bathroom with a good shower. It's a very nicely designed hotel but possibly because of the weather - it was snowing - it did feel very chilly. It's very handy for Birmingham New Street and Moor Street stations. Bit complicated getting back to the hotel at night when the Bullring is closed. Had a lot of problems with the wifi - we never successfully managed to connect our tablet. We did have a couple of cocktails in the bar - they were expensive expensive but beautifully presented!
