Premier Inn Birmingham Broad Street (Canal Side) Hotel
Ranked #65 of 118 Hotels in Birmingham
Reviewed 18 July 2013

You would never know you were in such a big city as Birmingham as this Hotel is quiet with a canal running alongside it, absolutely beautiful. I expected the Premier Inn to be just a basic Hotel but I was so surprised once we set foot inside. The staff were very friendly & made a real effort to ensure we had a good stay & with a genuine smile. Our room was plentiful & clean & the bed was so comfortable, I had one of the best nights sleep in years. The breakfast was probably the best I've ever had which made our stay even more perfect. I can't remember the chef's name, and I did ask the receptionist later, (Tony, i think) as he should be highly complimented not only was his food cooked to perfection, he actually made the effort & came & spoke to us, making sure we were happy with everything & you rarely get that service. I can only criticise on two things one being minor as in whilst we were having breakfast the cleaners had already been in our room, I appreciate that they are busy but they could wait until we had checked out. Finally the parking, we could not find a space within the grounds of the hotel & had to wait. I was informed they are solving this problem by the car park being turned into a pay & display car park & the hotel users will also have to pay. I feel it should be included in your stay at the hotel, that's part of it, and who can say there will be a vacant place if it is made a public pay car park any way, this would make me think twice about staying again in the future, as I do like to park outside my selected hotel especially as you would have some form of luggage with you.

Dear Brenda B

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback about your stay with us. I'm very pleased to hear you had such a good night sleep- with our Goodnight Guarantee this is something we strive to achieve for every guest- as is the high levels of customer service our warm & friendly team provide. I'm pleased to hear our breakfast chef came to talk to you- he takes such pride in his work and really loves meeting our guests.

As you stated parking is not included in the rates and the recent change to pay and display has actually reduced the misuse of our cark park by non residents, freeing up spaces for our guests and making it easier for them to park. It is £5.00 for 24hrs for residents ensuring our are still getting good value for money in comparison to surrounding city centre car parks.

I would like to apologize for our housekeeping team servicing the room before check out- I will feed this back to them to ensure it does not happen again. If you do want to get in touch to discuss anything further, please give us a call on 0121 616 3421 and we will be more than happy to help.

We hope to see you again next time you visit Birmingham,

Kind Regards,

Sophie

Booked a one night stay. Arrived mid-afternoon and was promptly booked in and handed the key to my room. It was the hottest day of the year so far... when I got to my room - it was hot!!! Opened the windows as far as they could be opened (4 inches) and switched on the hotel provided fan. The room temperature was 29 Deg C. Had a great evening in Birmingham, arrived back at the hotel at approx 0020 and the bar was still open. So after a nightcap, I went to my room and discovered that despite the best efforts of the fan, the room temperature was 26.5 Deg C. Sleep was very difficult - too hot. The staff were great, the price was very reasonable, the room/bathroom was fine - a real shame about the lack of air conditioning. Would I stay here again - absolutely - just not on a very hot day/evening.

We arrived to a very warm welcome from the reception staff who were friendly and so helpful.
Located on Canal Side proved to be the ideal location for us as we had travelled by train and wanted to walk everywhere. The hotel room was clean, the breakfast was excellent and the whole deal represented excellent value for money.
We had the pleasure of meeting Christopher, the bar manager, who was so engaging and charming and obviously loved his work.
Yes, there is building work outside the hotel but working hours are restricted and most people would be out of their rooms anyway at these times. No problem for us and certainly not the hotel's fault!!!!
All in all a great stay with a really happy bunch of staff and we will definitely make a return visit.

We last stayed in this building 10 years ago when it was a Travelinn and have always liked it so were familiar with the popularity of the canalside location for tourists enjoying an evening drink, shoppers loaded with bargains, and good-natured clubgoers going out and returning after midnight. It was quieter than years ago as the majority of clubs and pubs which were adjacent have closed and moved to the other (North) side of Broad Street to be in the trendy and very popular Brindley Place. Delightfully the street outside still has the descendants of the 1993 family of geese who walk from the canal to the carpark and back as though they own it :)
We had a room overlooking the car park (East) which was out of the afternoon sun and cool despite the 30C heat outside, the room already had a fan and was quiet and we had a good night's sleep. The hotel is not air conditioned.
Luckily we obtained a space in the free car park by arriving mid afternoon as the surrounding former car parks in Holliday St have closed and are being redeveloped as spectacular buildings.
The reception staff were all friendly, professional and extremely helpful and made sure we had adequate drinks in the heatwave during our stay.
The Hyatt Hotel is 50 yards away in the same street so you enjoy exactly the same location but at a cheaper price, which means it is really good value!
Value meals can be obtained in the hotel and also there is a Wetherspoons and a McDonalds 200 yards away by the City Library.
The trick to driving to the hotel is to enter Birmingham from the North on the M6 and head for the excellent Aston University then follow the road signs (West) down the road tunnels to the ICC (International Conference Centre). That brings you to the tall black glass tower which is the Hyatt Hotel and the hotel is down the the same narrow cobbled street on the right hand side, easy. On leaving, even if heading to the South West of England, the quickest way out of the city is to retrace your route and head to the Jewellery Quarter then Aston, then M6 North West and then curve down to the M5.
Birmingham is a lot easier to get around than London as it is so compact you can walk to all the main shopping and leisure areas or station from the hotel if you are not carrying heavy luggage. It is also a lot quieter during the night than New York.
A great place.
Bob.

The location was isolated and there was construction work outside which made the stay noisy in the morning and not an appealing view. The breakfast offered in the morning was excellent as there was a continental breakfast as well as warm cooked food.

Premier Inn's are always a safe bet and this one is no exception, but it's setting makes it so much better than their usual properties. Right next to Gas Street Basin it is in a prime position for all the Birmingham Convention area attractions - Mailbox, Sea Life, ICC, NIA etc etc. We arrived on the hottest day of the year so reception were concerned for us with there being no air conditioning in the hotel - but not a problem - a large fan was available in the room and we were given a sheet to replace the duvet. As Lennie claims, the bed was extremely comfortable - far better than other budget hotels. Very friendly reception staff and everything as expected. One thing to be careful of, not the hotel's fault, the taxi company which picked us up for an evening event just along the Bristol Road ripped us off by charging £10 (a five minute journey). Fortunately coming back we were only charged £7!!!

Room Tip: We overlooked the car park which meant there was no noise at night. Suspect that the rooms over the...

Myself and the Wife used Premier Inn for the first time on the 5/7/13 because it was a suprise trip i had arranged to celebrate her 25th birthday taking in the excellent Lion King show and having a much needed break away (from the little ones mainly). Plenty of FREE car parking space if you get there the first couple of hours after check-in, staff was all very friendly and extremely helpful (even booked a taxi for us for the hippodrome) and the room was fantastic. They even provided a desk fan as it was very hot that night and offered thinner bed sheets. Didnt book breakfast in advanced but phoned reception in the morning and they said no problem! Breakfast was fantastic and very reasonable! Overall a great experance, and if we ever need a budget hotel out of the "famous three", premier inn has our vote everytime! 10/10
