Stayed here last night as went to see Scissor Sisters in concert at The LG Arena. Great location for LG, station and airport as well as NEC. Three of us shared a room which was no problem. Very clean and slept very well and breakfast was good. Didn't eat in the restaurant or use the bar. Free shuttle bus to station and the driver was fantastic. Would definitely stay here again.

Decent hotel with nice room and very comfortable bed. Room could have been a bit cleaner. I liked the essential oils sleep aids. Location very handy for the NEC and you can walk to the airport from here via the air-rail link. Path from the NEC is by the lake shaded by trees which is a bit spooky at night if you're alone, better to get a taxi from the railway station.

Having decided to combine a trip to Cadbury World and Drayton Manor, we felt that the Crowne Plaza would be the ideal hotel to fit with that itenary. We arrived at the hotel and went immediately to our room, we arrived quite late and decided to eat at the hotel.
The prices were quite expensive for not a particulary extensive or attractive menu, however we decided to go ahead with it anyway. Our starters took well over half an hour to arrive and we had to chase this up, we finally got our starters and the order was incorrect so we had to wait a little longer for the correct one to arrive. The resturant staff showed there annoyance that we had complained and decided then to not bother with us at all from that point onwards.

Once we had our starters we then had our main meal, which was fine. Both my son and husband then decided to have a sweet and ordered syrup sponge and my son jelly. There was another wait of half an hour until a waiter came out to say there was a problem with the sweets as they couldn't find the jelly....

After complaining to the manager we were told we were to have a discount of 50% of the food bill, which was fine - however when we got the bill we only had £9.00 deducted of a food bill £35.00? but at that point we were to fed up to complain and just wanted to go to bed.

We decided to cancel breakfast.

Possibly the worst of all was how my husband was treated by reception in the morning, with such disdain and rudeness - by the man at reception who also happened to be on shift the night before.

This was a treat for our children as our family holiday in the summer was ruined by weather and I feel that through no fault of ours that because of how we were treated by this hotel that this has tarnished what was a great family outing.

When you go to a hotel, you expect to be treated like you are the best guest and that nothing is to much trouble for you, unfortunately this was not the case for this hotel.
Shame as the hotel is beautiful, its just the employees that have let this one down.

What a differance a year makes!! Last October we stayed at this hotel as we were going to see Tom Jones at the LG Arena which is right next door. We got a cracking rate of £65.00 for a very nice room. As previous reviewers have noted, the bar is expensive but this is a large 4* hotel with a captive audience, so only what you would expect. This October we had tickets for Guns & Roses also at the LG Arena so decided to book again. The price had gone up to £106 which seemed a bit of a hike, but maybe Axel Rose is more popular than Tom Jones!! Arriving to check in (no queue) we were horrified to learn that parking (for our 2 cars) would be an additional £20.00. It was free last year. Thinking this was a bit steep we queried the charge with the receptionist - "it's on the web site" she said "we're only charging what other hotels do" and "we need to stop people parking here for the NEC". If it is on the web site it must be in very small print and just because other hotels charge it doesn't mean that you HAVE to! Policing the car park, which has barriers should be easy - only issue an exit pass to hotel guests!!
Our room was spacious, well equipped, spotlessly clean and with a nice view overlooking the lake and has I have already said the location is PERFECT for the LG Arena so we paid for the parking and retired to the bar (Axel Rose always arrives late). Drinks aren't cheap but the staff were attentive, the bar clean, the TV not too intrusive, the view good with Sunday papers available. BUT £3 for a tiny bowl of pretzels is ridiculous, most hotels of this standard always give you a few nibbles with drinks especially considering the amount of money we parted with waiting for the concert. Shame on Crowne Plaza. It certainly didn't make us want to have supper or breakfast there, so they rather missed out on our custom.
This hotel could be so much better with just a little more attention to customer service, but I guess having a captive audience for the NEC and LG means it doesn't need to bother.

I do sometimes wonder who writes these reviews on tripadvisor - the Crowne Plaza is a typical well appointed 4 star hotel located principally for visitors to the NEC, business people and those flying out from Birmingham Airport (like us). There is very little there to find fault with.

The value for money aspect was very good - we paid £129 for a 4 star room for the night, 8 days parking whilst we were away on holiday and 2 very good 3 course dinners in the hotel restaurant. All we paid extra was for a bottle of wine with dinner.

I imagine that if there is a concert going on at the NEC this sort of deal would not be on offer.

Check in was fine, no queues, room excellent (though air con seemed to be turned off at night which made it too warm for us) no noise at all from outside, hotel nicely appointed in all respects. If we were flying from Birmingham again we would definitely use this hotel again. (There is a shuttle bus service to the airport which worked well)

Recommended.

The hotel that style forgot...without soul and with precious little efficiency. Decent help-yourself-breakfast and clean rooms but that's as good as it gets. A "cocktail bar" which doesn't serve cocktails (or draught beer come to that); a restaurant which serves overdone steak, tasteless Hollandaise sauce and a minuscule cheeseboard; an erratic accounting system which can leave you with charges for a mini-bar you haven't used; a surly "greeter" at breakfast. Handy for the NEC, of course, which is presumably where it gets most if its customers...but it could be so much better.
