Hotel du Vin & Bistro

We visited this hotel / bar / restaurant when it first opened and it was truly wonderful. However, when we visited on 28/12/12 we had a different experience. Initially our drinks in the bar were great and we had a great cocktail but later that evening when I requested some toothpaste from reception I was informed the hotel had run out and they didn't know if the local shops were open or not. I felt neither answer was good enough for a hotel of this quality. The real disappointment came in the morning when we didn't get the wake up call we had ordered at check-in and overslept, resulting in a chaotic, hungry and rushed morning which certainly was not what we wantes prior to our major wedding commitments of that day. I have since heard this company is allegedly in receivership. Certainly not good enough and way below previous standards.

It is sad to see what was such a fabulous hotel chain continue to decline.
But first I must compliment the staff on their service - they are maintaining an excellent standard.
However the rooms don't appear to have been touched since the old eye hospital was converted to a hotel approximately ten years ago.
What was truely shocking was the very badly full thickness crack in the bathroom sink- most unhygienic.
Please invest in your hotels Mdlmsisin before it is too late.

Me and my partner visit Birmingham a lot as we live just outside of the city itself.

We were really impressed with "HDV" and had a wonderful stay there, this being our first time.

The bistro staff were okay, there were too many people dealing with us so it was hard to get to know our waiter. We were asked by the bistro manager to move into the bubble lounge because they were setting up for breakfast the next morning.

This usually would of been an annoyance if it wasn't for the barman "wayne" who took really good care of us, he explained the cocktail and wine list to us and even made us laugh (on more than 1 occasion). He made us 2 of his own personal cocktails and we went on our way to our room-which was beautiful it has to be said.

Overall It was a great stay and I would recommend it to any one.

£209.00 for a room with plaster falling off is not my idea of an upmarket hotel. Also the heating was appalling and had an electric convector heater as back up.

Overall the hotel seemed tired. I have stayed in several hotels in Birmingham and was really looking forward to the 'chic' hotel experience which unfourtunatley wasnt to be.

Overall not impressed.

Oh breakfast was lovely...

Visited the du vin Birmingham on a sunday while sampling the German Market, the deal was exceptional, the room was great to get back to and into the onesie, crack a bottle of wine out of the wine cupboard then order one from room service, devour the crisps and posh nuts provided, then... A luxurious bath with personal products. Dress up and down to the restaurant for a lovely meal, awesome!

I booked this hotel as a last minute trip to birmingham to do abit of Christmas shopping and I'm so glad that I did. I didn't go down the the restaurant to eat but I did have room service and must say that I really enjoyed what I had ordered, as other reviews have said the main reception is very dark...but who cares...your not staying in the reception. Our room was a lovely room with a very comfortable bed and bathroom was great with a nice over sized bath/shower. Room was also very clean and well stocked mini bar and other essentials like hair dryer, iron etc. Didn't see much staff but the ones that we did have encounters with were very helpful and attentive. Will definitely be staying here again

Stayed one superb night. Large, very comfortable bed. My wife and I have stayed at Hotel du Vin previously on a special deal including bed & breakfast plus evening meal on arrival - we chose the chateaubriande at £5 supplement each and worth much more, which meant that we didn't take advantage of the cooked breakfast but had a lighter but lovely meal. The public areas are lit subtly, maybe dark for some people, but we like the atmosphere - though it was hard to see the lift call buttons! Car parking is a problem - we couldn't park outside to unload and paid £20 for our car to be driven away to store overnight, so we had to be sure we had everything out of it. Overall, though, a great stay with more than enough to see in the city within walking distance - good job as when it poured with rain briefly, our taxi driver didn't know where the Art Gallery & Museum was - unbelievable as it is massive and central! Staff in the hotel, on the other hand, were excellent, great service in the restaurant. Good value.
