Our first trip stay at Hotel Du VIn and we were not disappointed. Fantastic location, very central yet on a relatively quite back street. Charming staff, we got a warm welcome at check in and were made to feel like guests rather than punters! The Bistro is very cosy, dinner was imaginative and well executed, as a chef myself I can often be very hard to please. The wine list is weighty, as are some of the prices, but bargains can be found (try the gutsy Toro from Spain, only £23 a pop). We stayed in the Meerlust room, which was very comfortable, has a large bathroom, a great monsoon shower, and lots of extra touches that you might normally only expect in pricier places - fluffy bathrobes, fresh ground coffee/cafatiere, a carton of fresh milk in the fridge and decent sized toiletries. On returning to the Hotel after our concert we headed for the laid back 'Cigar Lounge' and sunk into leather armchairs while choosing from an extensive list of Belgian beers. Breakfast was superb, and check-out seamless. Booking our dinner bed and breakfast package direct from the HDV web site we paid just £155, I challenge anyone to beat that for value for money in Birmingham. Encore!

I stayed at the hotel for one night to attend a wedding celebration. The actual function was very well organised ,the food was good and the venues used were also very good.
The room we were given was one of their standard rooms for which we were charged £150 WITHOUT breakfast for one night!
The room was very small, bare and looked very tired. For this price we would have expected more spacious accommodation and breakfast to be included.
The hotel is obviously trying to be something different but I am afraid it is not succeeding. I had friends staying in nearby "budget hotels" who received much better value for money

We had our wedding at Hotel du Vin in june, and it was amazing.
Nothing was too much trouble, the food, service and attention to detail was wonderful, and all of our guests have commented on ii.
We stayed in the principal suite - a little like staying in a cathedral, it's so huge, but worth every penny. Enormous, comfortable bed, enormous bathroom, luxurious double bath and shower etc. Everything you could want.
For anyone thinking of holding their wedding there, I would advise them not to hesitate, this is a truly fantastic hotel.

Some people are so hard to please. I stayed here two nights ago and it's a wonderful little hotel. It was clean, the service was exceptional and the food .... fantastic.

I love HdV hotels and this was no exception. From the other reviews about ti being dirty - our room was a deluxe on the 3rd floor and it was immaculate! The room itself could have been a little bigger but the bathroom was lovely. Nice roll top bath, monsoon shower, nice toiletries - just want you want from a short break hotel.

As for the moans about the vallet parking, there is an NCP just around the corner that charges £9 for 24 hours (unless you are too lazy to park the car yourself!) Valet parking is not where they wash your car either, thats car valetting. *sigh*

"Valet parking is most often offered (and is most useful) in urban areas, where parking is scarce, though some upscale businesses offer valet parking as an optional service even though self-parking may be readily available." (Source Wikipedia)

I think this is a wonderful hotel for a short stay. I would not stay in it for a prolonged period of time. It is more than adequate. You need to compare it to other hotels a) In the area b) in the price range c) for the type of stay. On those points I would give it 5* but if I were to compare it to some top hotels I have stayed in in the world - maybe 3*. Some people need to offer up more helpful reviews and not compare something like this to the Burj Al Arab.

In MY opinion - compared with hotels in Birmingham it is without a doubt 5*.

(It's in a really lovely area of Birmingham too!)

We stayed overnight at the Hotel du Vin in July after attending one of their wine evenings. The hotel was quiet as it was a Sunday afternoon when we arrived but our room was ready and after dropping off our bags we went downstairs to the Bubbles bar and had a glass of champagne, (there was a choice of 5 different brands including pink - all nicely chilled).

Our room looked a little dark with everything painted dark brown (nearly black) and blackout curtains at the windows. However the sound-proofing was excellent with no noise from the street below and the air-conditioning was efficient and very quiet. The bed was king sized with beautiful white pure cotton bed-linen. A modern flat-screen TV and DVD player were on a writing table and iron and ironinb board inside a large wardrobe, which also had padded hangers - very nice.

The bathroom was a joy! Large, gleaming clean and plentiful supply of towels and toiletries. There was a large deep white bath and an extra large walk-in shower with a massive drench head and good powered water supply.

The wine tasting and meal were in a separate room off the courtyard, painted to look very old but really looked a bit dreary as if it needed a good spring clean but the meal (3-course, no choice except for vegetarians) was pleasant enough but nothing special.

Next morning we ate in the Bistro, again painted in a strange aged yellow and brown distressed combination. The full English breakfast was extremely good all cooked to order which was lovely compared to a buffet bar. The waitress was very pleasant and efficient, noticing our milk jug was empty before I did and replaced it without us even asking. Such a change from most English waiters who have the habit of walking around without looking at the tables even when you are trying to attract their attention.

On check-out our bill was handled quickly and our car (which had been valet parked) was brought around to the front of the hotel within 10 minutes.

I would have no hesitation in recommending and returning to the Hotel du Vin. The only downside was that the cleaners trolley was left (fully stocked) in the corridor outside our room for the whole of our stay.

  • Liked — Smiles from the staff and efficient manner in which everything was undertaken
  • Disliked — The cleaning trolley outside the door for the whole time

Hotel du Vin is a nice hotel no doubt but theres better value around i think. My room was quite cramped and a little tricky to navigate round the bed. Bed linen was very nice and bed comfortable. Bathroom a good size and high qaulity large bathroom products. Dissapointingly the LCD TV had a damaged screen Colleagues in other rooms complained of high traffic noise.

The food in the restaurant was of a high standard with great cheeseboard. Wine list extensive.

We visited Hotel du Vin Brum for a wine school weekend and were not disappointed.

The hotel is billed as the largest in the chain, but it is till very manageable, and friendly. The room (and especially the bathroom) were large and well maintained. The food we were served was of a high standard and the bar efficient

One suggestion - there is a club across the road on the city centre side of the hotel and at kicking out time it can get loud (the hotel is an old building, soundproofing was not a priority for the Victorians!) so ask for a room facing the interior courtyard, it may mean you get a better night's sleep.

Apart from this, our stay was very relaxing

  • Liked — The ambience
  • Disliked — The surrounding city - all concrete and chain shops
