We happened to be returning an unwanted birthday gift to Selfridges on Sunday when the helpful and efficient store manager offered my wife and I a complimentary glass of champagne in their Gallery restaurant. We could not refuse and she escorted us from Selfridges ground floor to their top level open aspect gallery. What a delightful employee she was.

Tasteful and contemporary in décor, this was our first visit to the Gallery and we were not disappointed. It was only about 12.15, so the restaurant tables were relatively empty so we picked one of the adjacent lounge areas, but we could also have sat at the bar. The staff had a quiet air of efficiency as they served our Moet in some very elegant glasses and we sipped on the nicely chilled bubbly for a good half an hour.

Having perused the menu at length, we decided to stay on for a light lunch. There was an attractive choice of sharing platters and sandwiches which seemed reasonably priced at £8 on average. We both selected the blackened chicken on focaccia bread with Mediterranean vegetables, plus a glass of Pinot Grigio at £5 per glass.

What a delight the sandwiches were! Fresh, moist and tasteful focaccia containing tender and beautifully cooked chicken, surrounded by an array of tender vegetables. The wine, again served in an elegant crystal, was superb. We lingered over each mouthful of food and drink and did not want to leave, even though we had gift vouchers to spend. Finally the thought of visiting the Alessi counter dragged us away, but we will return and we will tell our friends of an excellent and restful experience amid the hustle and bustle of Bull Ring shopping.

Restaurants like this is one of the reason British food has such a bad reputation. How they can charge such high prices for food here is beyond belief. Imagine the worst quality frozen chips deep fried dished up soaked in grease. Root veg the same. As was the processed fish, tasteless blackened chicken. Disgraceful. When the waitress was informed how unhappy we was with the meals she replied she was shocked as the chips was one of their best sellers. She said she would have a word with the chef. However when returned to give us the bill she whispered she had deducted £3.50 off the bill but had not told the chef of our complaint because she said "chef thinks he is Gorden Ramsey today". words fail me.
