“Lovely new hotel”
Reviewed 29 June 2013

It had only been open a week and I presume that was why it was £43 a night for a larger room with double bed and a sofa bed, free Wifi (which was great- even on the 14th floor), air con and breakfast! It’s great value for Birmingham.
The bed is firm and really comfy and there is a choice of soft or firm pillows. No bath but a lovely BIG shower. Windows don’t open, but the air con is pretty good although it only goes down to 18⁰C. Shame the tv is so small and so far away from the bed and sofa (see photo). It must be 10 ft from the top of the bed, and 15 ft from the sofa.
The breakfast is included in the room price and you help yourself to bread, toast, chocolate pastries, cereal, fruit, yoghurt, sausage, beans, juice etc.
The hotel is 2 minutes from Snow Hill Rail Station, but about 10-15 minutes from New Street Station. It’s in the business district and close to the Children’s hospital. If you’re a tourist and want to be close to the shops, and night life, then you’d be better off going elsewhere unless you don’t mind a walk.
I didn’t try the restaurant as I didn’t see a menu in my room or in the hotel. There are coffee shops and a Tesco Express near Snow Hill rail station. Or 2 minutes to the rear of the Wesleyan (you can’t miss it) there is a big Wetherspoons (The Square Peg) and some cheap eateries. I went to an Eat-for-less and got a big jacket potato (with a choice of generous fillings) for £1.99. These are at the top end of Corporation St so there’s a number of shops there too. Follow it down to the main shopping area.
The NIA, Mailbox, Alex Theatre and Hippodrome are all about 20 minutes’ walk away. I read that a taxi would be about £8.
I was on business and liked it here as it was much quieter at night than the touristy areas. So much so that I’ve already booked to go back. One good security feature is that you have to use your room card to get the lift to move up.
there's not much noise insulation between you and the corridor, so try and get a room at the far end if you want a quieter night.

Room Tip: if you want a quieter night, get a room at the far end of the corridor.

Arrival was ok, NCP next to hotel so parking very close.
Guests get reduction on this.

Check in smooth and front desk staff polite and efficient, thanks Jenny.

Foyer area clean and tidy and lifts to floors plentiful.

Room was on a corner and big enough and was great, windows don't open but we had aircon so no issue.

Bed ok, some pillows too soft. Chair seemed lost, but sofa I suppose takes up more space.
TV and tea facilities good.

Bathroom clean and functional, shower was massive. Bonus with free shower gel.

Bar area was clean and tidy, numerous good beers etc stocked and all in its place.
Jose behind the bar is a real star here. Polite, chatty and professional a real asset to the company. Very slick at what he does. Thank you.

Returning late at night, nice to see security at the foyer areas for customer peace of mind.

Good restful night and up for the complimentary breakfast.
Plenty of tables about and it was easy to get to the food, all items were well stocked by the staff. The eggs, sausage and
beans were good, you hear people (not here, at other hotels I've stayed at HIE) moaning about it. You must always remember that it's free and included in a well priced room charge. You don't have to eat it!! Go into the city and pay £10 instead at a cafe.
Breakfast staff kept the tables clear and were polite.

Checkout was swift and nice chatty staff again. Polite and efficient and easy to pay and settle the bar bill.

We will come back, this was our first Birmingham overnighter and enjoyed it.

Chameleon bar was recommended to us and didn't disappoint.

Thank you to all staff at the Snowhill HIE and see you again.

Oh, only moan... Not your fault. The tiles on the wall at the front of the entrance don't half let it down. I know it's the council.... But I'm sure with a few complaints they 'may' redo it to fit in with the new blocks nearby that make such a nice look to the area.

Thank you guys

Stayed here very soon after opening. One of the longest and most convoluted processes to check in that I've ever experienced. Must have been at the desk 15 minutes and there was no mention of what time breakfast was. Hotel information is on the TV (not in a brochure) and takes a bit of navigating. The people working were very pleasant though.

Brand new room. Think that I may been the first person staying there. As a Priority Club member, I would have appreciated one of the high floor rooms that other reviewers have mentioned instead of being stuck near the lift. Some very inconsiderate people nearby, with several loud arguments in the corridor in the early hours and lots of banging of doors.

Main strength of the room - there was an excellent large shower. Reasonable bed, although I did hear a bit of a crack at one point (and I'm not "large").

Breakfast was good for a budget hotel. Decent choice and fresh food.

Would be happy to stay here again, particularly at £35, but I really hope that the check in process gets sorted. There is a lot of competition for budget hotels in Birmingham though.

This one night stay was amazing value for £35 bed and breakfast for a twin room. The hotel is brand new and the spacious room was spotless with a lovely bathroom with a big double walk in shower. Nothing whatsoever to fault - you even get a choice of pillows either hard or soft. The beds were very comfy and we had panoramic views of Birmingham on the 8th floor. The staff were friendly and helpful from the start to the finish. Our request for extra milk and tea bags at around 11pm was accommodated with a cheery smile. The serve yourself breakfast was basic but totally adequate and considering how much we had paid for the night, pretty amazing really! One thing to remember is if you are parked in the adjacent ncp car park get your ticket validated at reception for 50% off the price. Oh, and make sure you leave the car park by the correct door otherwise you face a long hike round to the hotel entrance!

Stayed in the family room for one night. Hotel very clean and still smell new due to it just being opened about two weeks ago. Love the spacious and clean shower. The Staffs was very friendly and assisted very promptly to our requests on arrival, (like putting up the extra bed, fixed the TV and provide us with extra pillows and towels) However, it was obvious that some of them was new, nervous and didn't know much what is really going on in the place. I believe in time and with appropriate training they will get better. It was not easy to navigate. The time we saw the Hotel, we have already passed the entrance and have to make a turn. The Hotel does not have its own parking and there is an extra charge of £12 overnight. The breakfast was average and staffs was organizing total chaos. There is nobody present to take your room number. Anyone off the street could have easily walked in and help themselves. There were not enough staff around. The breakfast bar is far too small (bad design) and you almost sat on top of another. Being touched by kids with sticky bake beans fingers is not very relaxing and it is very hard to avoid!! Other than the bad design breakfast area everything else seems bearable for a night or two.

nice hotel nice rooms excellent shower!! but the hotel doesn't have its own parking instead they discount the NCP one next door so beware the charges!! £12 a day on top of your room rate!!
the food in the breakfast room is very basic and not up to the usual standard of Holiday Inn Express's that I've stayed at!

Room Tip: anything away from the lifts which go bing bong constantly !!
