Fabulous coffee and friendly staff are the good café essentials and Mothers delivers them both.
If you are a music fan, a visit is essential as this is a true shrine to the legend that was Mothers club. Back in the day, John Peel was a regular compere and bands such as The Who, Pink Floyd, Tyrannosaurus Rex graced the stage in suburban Erdington. There is a great collection of memorabilia to appreciate as you enjoy your coffee and cake.
Go see and enjoy.

Mothers Cafe has been open for a few months now and is independently run, its name and decor paying homage to the famous Mothers Club (1968-71) in Erdington High Street.

I have visited a few times and wanted to wait for any 'teething problems' to be ironed out before reviewing, which I think is only fair for any new business.

First the good points. The coffee is lovely, expertly made and is better than any of that offered by the major chains. The food is also good and reasonably priced. I also love all the photographs and other memorabilia which adorn the walls and which makes for a refreshing change from corporate blandness.

The negatives? Service really does need improvement. Despite a fair number of staff working at the cafe on my last visit, the service was haphazard and I was left standing there like a lemon waiting too long for a simple coffee that appeared to have been forgotten about. I ordered a sandwich and was told the kitchen was closed (there was actually a backlog of breakfast orders). For a cafe to be turning away business at midday was frankly astonishing, particularly when there were more than enough able-bodied staff faffing around the counter area. However, the biggest astonishment was the fact that in the entire 40 minutes I was sat down, not once did any of the staff clear away any of the dirty breakfast plates that had been left on the next table. There was ample opportunity to do so and I'm afraid that's a major no-no in my book.

I really want Mothers Cafe to do well, for Erdington's sake as much as the owners. But as a business, they need to take it much more seriously and make sure the staff act professionally.
