Premier Inn Birmingham City Centre (New St Station) Hotel

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 April 2014

I missed my last train home, so the location of this Premier Inn was ideal - so close to Birmingham New Street station.

The Receptionist was nice, and efficient. The room was very clean, and very spacious. It had a huge "wet room" shower and toilet and basin. The bed was big and comfortable, with a choice of pillows. The room had the basics, but done very well.

But the stand-out excellence in service came from Joyce who worked in the breakfast room. There was a good selection of "help-yourself to as much as you like" tasty cooked English breakfast food, as well as cereals, fruits, fruit juices, and bread, muffins, and croissants all of which could be toasted or heated. But it was Joyce who made it pleasurable; she went from person to person, making sure they were OK and knew where everything was, chatting to people who wanted to talk, encouraging me to have the second croissant that I wanted really (and getting it for me), and being kind and gentle with a guy who was hungover from his night before.

Thank you Joyce.

We wanted a central, reasonably priced hotel for a stay in Brum - and the Premier Inn was perfect. Efficient check in, clean and comfortable room along with friendly staff made it a great choice. We didn't eat there, but there are decent restaurants close by. As it is a stone's throw from the station and the Electric Cinema, it was just what we were after. We would certainly stay there again.

Slightly mechanical check in but efficient
Quiet clean room as one comes to expect now in a Premier Inn.
Very good steak meal - cooked to perfection
Breakfast was amazing. Fantastic personal service from Joyce and Kirsty (?) in particular. Treat restaurant as if it was their own. Could not do enough for all the customers.
Very good quality of food too.
Great location for shopping too!

Great location in the city centre with direct access to the Bullring through the Pallisades (currently being refurbed). Quiet, clean, comfortable rooms and very welcoming and friendly staff - book the breakfast as it is excellent if you like a full English.

Mildly expensive but very convenient. No car park was only downside. Non-nonsense nice staff ie not corporate gushing. Everything was just a bit above expectation. Well done. I shan't bother with a Travelodge now if this is typical of Premier Inns.

Room Tip: No car parking but is being investigated for future.

This hotel got just about everything right - right location, right price, right levels of comfort, very friendly staff (but not at all intrusive), good security and, yes, I did even get a good night's sleep.

Good points: the hotel is 2 minutes' walk out of the main station and next door to the Bullring, 15 minutes' walk to the ICC, and on the doorstep of the main shopping areas and tourist attractions. The hotel itself is functional and clean, and the rooms are a decent size with good-sized bathrooms. Rooms also appeared to have been refurbished recently. The reception staff were particularly helpful and really pleasant to deal with.

Bad points: the bed was a bit hard, and twin rooms comprise a double bed and sofa bed. Only one wall socket was available anywhere near the bed for plugging in phone chargers etc. These things are surprising for what looked like a recently refurbished hotel, especially since the beds are now being replaced with pocket spung mattresses. The lifts seemed extremely slow due to only 2 lifts serving all 10 floors (including the car park).

The overall experience was positive, and I recommend the hotel for anyone visiting Birmingham for a few days looking for a great value and convenient hotel.

Room Tip: 10 floors overall - if you're afraid of lifts or needing to be in and out quickly, ask for a low...
