“Second visit not as good as first”
Reviewed 17 August 2012 via mobile

Very impressed last time but this visit exposed a few less positive points.
1. The room seemed slightly tired with some scuffs and marks and the chair was in need of a clean or replacement.
2. There were only two pillows provided and no spares in the cupboard.
3. The duvet seemed heavy and wasn't feather where I seem to call it as being light and feathery last time.
4. The grab rail over the bath was dangerously loose and the bath didn't drain properly. Some maintenance issues to be dealt with here (room 1415)

5. My colleague and I were explicitly told that as hotel guests we qualified for 50% off starters and mains in the restaurant. It turned out to be mains and sides.
6. Up-selling in the restaurant was very pushy. While perusing the wine list we were fairly aggressively pushed towards a more expensive wine than we wanted. We were perfectly capable of choosing our own wine and held our ground. And when ordering a starter shown on the menu as being suitable for sharing we were pushed towards a larger serving which we didn't want or need.
7. While waiting to check out the receptionist answered the phone while I was waiting. Why is it more acceptable to keep a customer waiting at the desk instead of letting the phone ring? I had been waiting for quite some time!

None of this is terrible but it takes the edge off an otherwise excellent place.

Stayed here overnight whilst visiting Birmingham for a concert and found the experience very pleasant. Staff were welcoming and helpful, room was large, well-designed, comfortable and clean. Good breakfast. We shall certainly return.

We spent one night here during a hectic round-UK trip. The hotel was everything we hoped for from the Rad. Efficient check-in (despite a massive group of Japanese tourists), good service in the restaurant and a clean and well appointed room. We slept well.

No complaints at all. Great location: we walked five mins from the train station.

Room Tip: Go high for a quiet night.

Carlson Club Member. Business class room. Probably last decorated when the hotel was built. Rooms really need attention, stains on carpets and walls. Turndown consisted of Pulling the sheets back. Concierge on arrival did not exist. Valet Parking service consisted of 'Not today we have a coach coming in' (Never saw the coach yet) Reception staff really couldn't care less when we checked in. One bar staff in the evening - ultimately meant waiting 10 to 15 minutes at the bar to get served. Breakfast service on the 2nd dy was appalling. Serving pots of tea with saucers on the top as 'they had no lids' Complained to the restaurant manager, who was very apologetic and helpful, but hey, he can only work with the tools he has. I will never return to this hotel again. I stay in Radisson hotels on a regular basis and this is definitely 'Not in the Radisson League' They did kindly take care of the Parking charges because of the problems we had encountered over the 2 days - I would have preferred the to have paid the charges and had a decent stay. The friends we were with are both General Managers of different hotels in Scotland and they were appalled. I am in the Travel business and would be horrified if we placed clients in a hotel that offered this sort of service. Carlson need to address this and quickly - word soon spreads. NEVER AGAIN

Have seen some of the other reviews for this hotel and surprised as we enjoyed our stay - but then I had done my homework so knew where it was, car park situation etc so could not complain,
Our room was on 14th floor and we had no issues with noise at all. Our room was big, clean and comfy. Bed was very soft which I know not everyone likes but OK for us. Only two small pillows for two of us - with no extras in cupboard - would have prefered more but by time we realised already undressed so made do.
Staff were friendly and polite. Check in was quick and easy.
The hotel is right next to New Street Station so you get the usual mix of people one would expect with that sort of area.
The bar was nice but could have been a bit bigger for such a big hotel. My only real issue with this place was the restaurant which was poor but don't want to mark the hotel down for this as I will review that seperately.

Room Tip: Rooms higher up less noisy

View was opposite block of flats!!! Suite very spacious with a great bathroom which was not particularly clean needed updated and grouted as looked grubby
. Gym/ spa!!!! You could not swing a cat in this, meal at finilli was nice, breakfast average, however best point the bed was extremely comfy
Had high hope for this was very disappointed .
if fact the whole suite needs updating,

We stayed there on July 27th 2012. We had a lovely meal in the hotels Italian restaurant Felini (I think) we got upgraded to a Business Class room on the 16th floor, with excellent views over Birmingham, the rooms are very large and beds very comfortable, the location is excellent for the bars we walked to the Mailbox (3 minutes) then down the canal to Brindley Place (5 minutes) It was the opening night of the Olympics so it was very busy but with a real good buzz around the place, hotel staff were very good, overall a great day had by my wife and I, would recommend to all.

Room Tip: go high!! the views are great - ask for a upgrade be cheeky!!
