“Great Liitle Hotel”
Reviewed 11 April 2011

Stayed at the Briar Rose over the weekend for a break with my partner.

Standard of hotel is great, rooms are very nice, perfect for a cheap break.

Hotel is ideally located, right next to all the shops and just a short walk or taxi drive away from the bars.

Looking to come back to the hotel in July.

Was on the 5th floor. Nice room. The odd strand of the previous occupants hair around, so could have been better cleaned. Lovely clean bed and towels .Flatscreen TV nice and large with good selection of channels (freeview). Quiet room, with no noise from the pub and only a minimal amount from outside and then that was short-lived. The noisiest bit was the heavy bedroom doors that everybody seemed to allow to slam at any hour of the day or night. Not the hotel's fault. All staff in the pub and hotel very pleasant. I liked the fact I did not have to have a mammoth breakfast. I had porridge and large coffee for £2 ish which suited me fine. Unfortunately lift broke one evening and I had to lug heavy shopping up the stairs without any offer of help, despite me advising them I was partially disabled. Nice coffee, tea and biscuits in room and there is also a hairdryer. Internet in the bar area only. Would stay again as the location is unbelievable. Parking - disabled bays, lots of, outside the hotel with no time limit. Round the corner in Waterloo Road and other surrounding streets there is 2 hour max, pay and display on road parking which I remember was £4.20 for 2 hours. The city is seething with traffic wardens so take no chances. I understand there is an NCP carpark fairly nearby.Took taxi for £5 to the Canal basin one evening so not too bad and definitely worth the visit for the prettiness of the canals at night and the wine bars/restaurants. Don't forget the Sealife Centre there. That was worth every penny.

I went for a weekend away to Birmingham with some friends and as the price was so reasonable (£49 for a twin room) my expectations weren’t that high. However I was pleasantly surprised! The receptionist was friendly and efficient, and the rooms are very tastefully decorated and clean. There are tea / coffee making facilities and a large flat screen TV. The bed was comfortable with feather pillows and duvet (you can ask for alternatives if you are allergic).

Breakfast wasn’t included in the price, but you can eat in the Wetherspoons restaurant downstairs which of course is very cheap n cheerful. I was very pleased with my porridge and mocha which came to less than £3.

It took us about 10 mins to walk from Snow Hill train station (with bags) and about 15 mins to walk to the city centre.

I tend to go away to various hotels throughout the year and I didn’t feel I was staying in a budget hotel at the Briar Rose, I would definitely recommend it.

I paid £40 for a one night stay for a double room - and didnt arrive with too many expectations or very high hopes.

It was a real treat to get this sort of value for money - my room was immaculate, really comfy double bed, 4 pillows, excellent bathroom and large flat screen tv - just exceptional for £40 per night.

Best value in brum - will use nowhere else from now on.

My boyfriend and I regularly visit Birmingham for weekend getaways but usually go for accommodation on Broad Street to be in the middle of everything. This was a stay from 31st December 2010 to 3rd january 2011 and although we were here to party for New Year, we really wanted to start sales shopping :)

The Briar Rose is a 10 minute walk from New Street station. Reception is the door before the entrance to the pub. We arrived on New Year's eve at about 7pm so all was relatively quiet. All staff all weekend were very polite and very helpful. The room although small was exactly waht we needed for our short stay. small open wardrobe, desk/dressing table, tea and coffee, TV with plenty of channels, lovely clean bathromm and an extremely comfortable bed. There is no view from the room - just another wall.
We were in our room about an hour, getting ready for our night out when a male member of staff appeared at the door with a rather large bottle of Moet on ice with 2 glasses. We thought he'd made a mistake and he politely said, no is included in the price for everyone tonight. What an absolutely lovely touch and something you wouldn't get in some 5 star hotels.
The Wetherspoon's breakfast was well needed the next morning!
The Briar Rose is a perfect place to stay for shopping - main high st on the door step and it's only a 5 minute walk to the Bullring and Pallasades. It's a 15 minute walk to Broad Street and a 10 minute taxi to Digbeth (beware, our taxi ranged from £5 to £15 - but I'm assured by the locals it should be between £5-£8).
We have now deciede to make the Briar Rose our regular place to stay when in Birmingham now.

stayed here last weekend for a friends birthday, had a ball in brummie!! the hotel room must have recently been refurbed as it was lovely. The bathroom was brand new. lush tiles and fittings, bed was very comfortable, room lovely, modern colours, lots tea and coffee, could not fault it. it only cost 34 or 38 for the night for 2 of us..........bargain or what!! and the fact it is a J.D. Wetherspoon, only need to walk down the stairs and you have cheap food, which was lovely, and cheap beer before hitting the town, which is in walking distance. i must add that the staff both on hotel reception and the bar were very friendly - would not hesitate to stay again, i would even say it was better than one of the hilton hotels that i have stayed at that cost 100.00 a night!
