“Read this before you even think about staying here!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2011

First let me say our room was clean, and not to to shabby., that is where the pros of this hotel end!

The Weatherspoons pub downstairs is the filthiest one in the chain i have ever seen with the sketchiest people in Brum frequenting it.

The room.. We were woken at 4am to tons of glass bottles been thrown into a metal bin. I figured it could only go on for so long but this went on until 7:30 am! Then there was still loads of noise coming from the alley. We didn't sleep a wink in the room and were very upset the next morning. Its not like it was a little noise either, it was VERY loud!!

We went to reception in the morning and complained to the pregnant woman and another fellow that the room we are in is totally un-rentable with the noise. They seemed to know all about the noise and how loud it gets and said its not their problem as its the pub beside them that cleans up their bottles. They offered me free coffee which i turned down. When i asked to talk to the manger they said it was only them there and they could give me a 5% discount and that was it. So basically i paid for a night in a hotel i couldn't sleep in and the staff couldn't care less AND they knew all about how loud the room was.

After such an unpleasant experience i will no longer have anything to to with this chain or any of their affiliates. Good luck if you stay here!

Room Tip: stay elsewhere

Dear Amy W,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.

Firstly I would like to apologise, here at The Briar Rose Hotel we set ourselves the highest possible standards unfortunately, on occasions we may fall short of these desired standards, so I would like to apologise for the points you have made.

Unfortunately we are not able to stop neighbouring buildings from disposing of their rubbish at specific hours, but we do ask them to take our guests into consideration.

Kind Regards,

The Briar Rose Hotel Team.

Stayed for two nights over the weekend and would throroughly recommend to anyone. The location is just off the main high street in Birmingham so great for shopping & also getting to/from New Street station. The room was of a very high standard and excellent quality. The only downside was heard some noise on Sunday morning of bins being opened/closed and barrels being moved around. When we looked out the window the room overlooked an alley which pubs/bars use at the end of evenings. Not a big deal as it is city centre but something to bear in mind especially if on the lower floors. For the price we paid though it was excellent value!

I stayed in a family room, which I had booked through Late Rooms for £69 (room only.)

The room was spacious, modern and clean with great facilities such as kettle, hairdryer, flat screen tv, telephone. There was also an interesting guide book on Birmingham with plenty of ideas for anyone staying there for a sightseeing trip.

The room was large and the bed was comfortable, there was a bath and shower in the bathroom.

My room was on the 4th floor and I could not hear any noise from the pub or the street.

The lady at the reception was very friendly and helpful.

The location of the Hotel is ideal, a short walk from the New Street station and the all the high street shops.

Room Tip: Book a family room

Stayed at the Briar Rose over the weekend for a break with my partner.

Standard of hotel is great, rooms are very nice, perfect for a cheap break.

Hotel is ideally located, right next to all the shops and just a short walk or taxi drive away from the bars.

Looking to come back to the hotel in July.

Was on the 5th floor. Nice room. The odd strand of the previous occupants hair around, so could have been better cleaned. Lovely clean bed and towels .Flatscreen TV nice and large with good selection of channels (freeview). Quiet room, with no noise from the pub and only a minimal amount from outside and then that was short-lived. The noisiest bit was the heavy bedroom doors that everybody seemed to allow to slam at any hour of the day or night. Not the hotel's fault. All staff in the pub and hotel very pleasant. I liked the fact I did not have to have a mammoth breakfast. I had porridge and large coffee for £2 ish which suited me fine. Unfortunately lift broke one evening and I had to lug heavy shopping up the stairs without any offer of help, despite me advising them I was partially disabled. Nice coffee, tea and biscuits in room and there is also a hairdryer. Internet in the bar area only. Would stay again as the location is unbelievable. Parking - disabled bays, lots of, outside the hotel with no time limit. Round the corner in Waterloo Road and other surrounding streets there is 2 hour max, pay and display on road parking which I remember was £4.20 for 2 hours. The city is seething with traffic wardens so take no chances. I understand there is an NCP carpark fairly nearby.Took taxi for £5 to the Canal basin one evening so not too bad and definitely worth the visit for the prettiness of the canals at night and the wine bars/restaurants. Don't forget the Sealife Centre there. That was worth every penny.

I went for a weekend away to Birmingham with some friends and as the price was so reasonable (£49 for a twin room) my expectations weren’t that high. However I was pleasantly surprised! The receptionist was friendly and efficient, and the rooms are very tastefully decorated and clean. There are tea / coffee making facilities and a large flat screen TV. The bed was comfortable with feather pillows and duvet (you can ask for alternatives if you are allergic).

Breakfast wasn’t included in the price, but you can eat in the Wetherspoons restaurant downstairs which of course is very cheap n cheerful. I was very pleased with my porridge and mocha which came to less than £3.

It took us about 10 mins to walk from Snow Hill train station (with bags) and about 15 mins to walk to the city centre.

I tend to go away to various hotels throughout the year and I didn’t feel I was staying in a budget hotel at the Briar Rose, I would definitely recommend it.
