“Excellent room, surroundings not brilliant.”
Reviewed 10 December 2012

Excellent room, very clean. Beds slide around the room when you sit on them, and lighting a bit dim, but otherwise suprisingly good. Perfectly situated a short walk to New Street, Broad Street, and The Bullring. Not so great is the noise from the pub next door, which thumps on until 1.00 at the earliest. Also, as in many hotels for £69 per night situated in a city centre, you will get inebriated guests returning to their room in the small hours and talking at the top of their voices for hours afterwards. Also, got wafts of some illegal substance being smoked via an open window. Staff very helpful and friendly, especially when they couldn't find our booking when we arrived because their software sometimes doesn't recognise the main guest but searches on the second guest in the room. All ended well though.

Room Tip: If they have rooms facing away from main road, ask for one of those. You aren't going to spend...

Stayed here on a Friday night after we had been to see War of The Worlds at NIA. Check in was excellent member of staff on duty was most helpful.

The room we booked was comfortable and clean, although would appear that cleaner forgot to wipe out sink from previous guest.

Returned to hotel after concert, ready for a nights sleep only to be disturbed by noisy guests in room opposite, who thought that shouting was the new talking and very loud music from the pub/club next door, which caused the water in a glass to vibrate on table!!

At 12.15 we had had enough and rang down to reception to say we wanted to check out and that would they order a taxi to take us to car park as we didn't fancy walking across Birmingham at that time of night.

The night manager tried his best to make us stay saying the music stopped around 1ish, but given as we were quite tired after a day in Birmingham and wanted some guaranteed sleep we left and drove home, which was around 45 mins.

We had originally planned to spend time shopping in Birmingham on the Saturday, but I think we would have been walking around like zombies if we had stayed.

I hasten to add that the music was not the hotels fault, but at 11.30 I was hoping for a Martian invasion and they would use the heat ray against the club next door!!!

I would say if you want a good nights sleep at a weekend then I would not recommend staying at this hotel.

Room Tip: If you are going to stay here on a Friday or Saturday, then make sure you ask for a room at back of...

Stayed here some years ago and was disappointed - however, on this occasion everything was as it should be. The room was spotless and well furnished, and very comfortable (this was a superior room). The only downside is that being a city centre hotel, there are no views - the windows look out on a small courtyard with a fire escape - but being here for one night in winter, it didn't matter at all.

Of course, being a Wetherspoon hotel means you can have a great breakfast at a great price too!

Booked this hotel to spend the weekend with friends at the Christmas market. Cannot fault the quick check in experience and location right by the main shopping streets. We could shop and drop our bags as we went.

Shame that the heating was broken for the whole of Saturday (it was about 3 degrees outside), meaning we woke up freezing cold (it is an old building and fairly drafty without heating!) and there was no solution suggested when I called reception to ask about it. Luckily, it was fixed by the late evening.

Rooms are basic but very clean when we checked in- though the housekeeping during the stay was poor- soaking wet towel not removed from bathroom or anything cleaned, no new towels offered.

Great that the hotel is near lots of bars and yet is quiet- breakfast in the pub on the ground floor was great value.

The room was fine nothing I could see out of place or dirty. Didn't find the bed to comfy though pillows were massive and quilt abit cheap but didnt effect my stay. Couldn't hear a sound from anywhere especially as downstairs was so noisy couldn't hear anything at all!! The food was delicious- we had a breakfast which was good. Chicken burger at dinner was superb!! Food was very good and good value for money!! The drinks offers were excellent there wasn't any need to go elsewhere!! Would recommend to all my friends and family for definite. Will definitely be coming back. Very good location. A couple of minutes from the bullring.

Stayed here as a couple on business for 1 night on 27/11/12. Booked the night before on late rooms and took a 'convertible' twin/double. Arrived in the morning by train and dropped off bags at reception before rushing to a meeting which was dealt with without fuss. Finally checked in at 9pm, a lot later than we had told them but again this was no problem. At this point I have to say this was possibly the best check in experience I've encountered in a long while!! We were greeted by receptionist David Hobson who could not have been more polite, cheerful, welcoming, helpful, professional, and efficient in equal measure. We offer bed & breakfast in our pub and I would employ this guy in a heartbeat. After a short chat it transpired David was only 19 and had been in the job only a month. Gobsmacked. I hope JD Wetherspoons realise the value of an employee like this. Back to the room... I was a bit concerned that our bed would be 2 single beds pushed together. It was. However this resulted in us having the most enormous double with no 'roll together' nor a hard lump in the middle, it was great. The room was very comfortable and modern and the bath and shower great. For £55 I would definitely recommend this hotel and will certainly stay again. You can upgrade to a superior room but I don't see why you would need to, room 101 is very spacious and comfortable. A great stay.

We wanted a hotel close to Victoria Square and this was one of the first we found. It's tucked away next to a couple of bars, but once inside, it's a quiet and secure location.

There's not much of a view from the back rooms, but that's to be expected in a city centre hotel. The facilities in the room are pretty much what you would hope to find and the price of the room is comparable with similar quality hotels in the city.

One thing to bear in mind if you're travelling by car is that the nearest car park is a good walk away. The hotel recommend parking in Livery Street, which is the car park next to Snow Hill railway station but be warned - the car park closes at night and you can't get your car out until the following morning.

On the whole, if you're planning a stop in the city centre, this hotel would be a great place to base yourself.

Room Tip: There are two bars next to the hotel, so it might be worth asking for a room on an upper floor to be...
