“We loved our Pod!”
Reviewed 12 October 2008

Arrived in Birmingham for a weekend away and we were pleasantly surprised to find the hotel in quite a convenient location for local amenities. The Mailbox Mall was really close and full of great restaurants, being Kiwi's we were ultimately drawn to Gourmet Burger Kitchen.
But back to the hotel, the rooms were tiny, so be prepared. However in this tiny room is everything you need for a hotel room. Great innovative design and brilliant large flat screen TV. Pod console control controls all of the facets of the room, lights, underbed night lights and dimmer switch etc. Brilliant design and perfect if you're ok with a small room, and aren't staying long term.
Nice touch was the roof cam, so you can check out the weather before you leave the room as the rooms have no windows!

  • Liked — room design, innovative room control, free internet and wifi
  • Disliked — room was a bit small, but manageable

A great hotel. We mainly booked the hotel due to tripadvisor reviews and the excellent price - £45 for a double room.

We weren't disappointed. The hotel was clean and modern and the room had everything we needed for an overnight stay. The bar/cafe was an extra bonus.

The only negative aspect is the lack of soundproofing of the bathroom. I would imagine this could be a little embarassing for new couples!

After all the fab reviews on this hotel, we decided to book a room for one night. The room was very clean, not in the slightest noisy and loved how the room used every space. The bed was the most comfortablest bed I have ever slept in, so much so that I did not want to leave on the Sunday. It is conveniently located by the Mailbox, which has a good range of bars and restaurants. Can't wait for more Nitenites to open up around the UK and Europe. Let's hope it's going to be sooner than later!

Went to a show at NIA which was nearby and needed somewhere cheap to stay overnight. Booked the room, plenty of online deals on their website, it was tiny but well appointed. Frosted glass door to ensuite meant limited privacy, but that was the worst thing. The location was superb, near to pubs/restaurants but was not at all noisy. There were a few car parking spaces outside the front - we thought parking would be a problem so we parked in a nearby (and ££) shopper car park. People there were about our age (20's). I'd stay again under the same circumstances (1 night) but not for longer because it would be too cramped.

We stayed here on 02/09/08 for an evening because we were going to Glyn Purnell's restaurant in the city and needed to where to crash after fabulous food and wine. The hotel cost less than a sixth of the resturant bill! Hotel - £45, restaurant - £240!

I was a bit nervous as about 2 years ago I had the horrific misfortune of staying at the easy hotel and I thought this might be along the same lines but it really really isnt.

Location wise it is right next to the mailbox complex of harvey nics, wine bars and the Malmaison (incidentally that is a great hotel too but you are playing for it!!). It is about a 5 minute for from New Street train station too. There is an NCP that the Crowne Plaza use too across the road.

The hotel itself is clean (VERY clean), modern, and functional. We are quite a tidy couple and the space was small but we coped with it easily... I can imagine with a lot of luggage it could get tricky. The bathroom is far better than some of the so-called 4star hotels in the city (Copthorne, holiday inn).

It is a small room with a small price. If you need to get your head down - stay here!

  • Liked — everything - especially the price!
  • Disliked — that this hotel isnt in other cities

The nitenite's an unusual hotel but, as most other people seem to have commented, as long as you know what to expect, it's great.

It's about 600 metres (0.4 miles) to walk from New street Station, and then less than 300 metres (0.2 miles) to the Symphony Hall of Town Hall, so is ideally situated for some decent concerts. It's also next door to the Mailbox (high end shopping) and within walking distance of the Bull Ring (major shopping centre).

Arriving at the hotel, you're presented with a swish reception area, with dark woods and twisting staircase. It really does look high quality. The staff member on duty was friendly and efficient, and we'd got our room key quickly.

The room? Obviously small but nicely kitted out. A large enough bed for two, a 42" TV screen dangling above your feet (showing a webcam image of the outside, as if to replicate a window), a tiny desk/dressing area and a fantastic bathroom, albeit separated from the main room by nothing more than a glass door - make sure you're familiar with anybody you happen to be staying with!

The walls are padded (do they expect you to go mad in this 10' x 7' (3mx2.2m) room?), there's plenty of storage space under the bed for any bags, the door is heavy and blocks out sound well, and there's a funky green control panel that looks after the room lights, mood lighting, desk lighting, temperature and so on. It's quite cool, but the green glow it emits, even when dimmed right down, may be distracting for some.

It may be small, but the hotel is perfectly formed, although I concede I didn't use it for much more than a room for night so can't comment on the food and drink options, or such like. For £40 for the night I was quite happy and, with £30 rates available from time to time, I doubt you'll spend a better value night in Birmingham. I wouldn't, however, want to spend a great deal longer there.

In a city where hotel prices seem on the high side, this is an excellent budget options. And having previously experienced the sticky carpets at the Britannia in New Street, Nite Nite was relative luxury for a similar price.

I paid £47 on a deal via the Nite Nite website, and liked:

* The honest promotional blurb on the website: the rooms are small and the company don't make any attempt to hide that, so there are no nasty suprises when you open the door to your room
* a well planned, slightly funky space with everything you need for a short stay (for one person, anyway, I couldn't comment if it'd be functional with two)
* comfortable bed, good pillows, decent shower
* very clean throughout, decent bed & bathroom linen
* free internet access in the lobby
* Excellent location, near the city centre & New Street Station, Rep and Symphony Hall, plus very, very near the Mailbox, with its restaurants, cafes and a Tesco Metro
* Friendly helpful staff on reception

I didn't like:
* dimmer on the control panel wasn't that dim, so the room was a bit light for me (and I'd thought having no windows it would be really dark, so - silly me - I didn't bring my 'especially for hotel-stays' eye mask)
* high pitch electical whine that I couldn't track down and turn off

Also, it's not really fair to complain about this, as I knew to expect no windows, but the reality of the sensory deprivation was a bit weird. When someone came along the corridor at 3am, I woke up thinking it must be morning.

Overall, I would (and almost certainly will) stay here again, as I think it is the best budget option on offer in the city centre and I'd trade cleanliness and a decent bed for space any day.
